Once Upon a Push Pin Heart

Kenna Geary

It once beat and breathed for you.
This golden heart of mine.
It was yours to hold,

To keep warm and close…
But instead, you broke it.

You broke my heart
And then tried cleaning it up
As if it were a shattered plate.

It’s not just something you can tape back together
With rubber bands, thumbtacks, and paste.

It used to beat and breathe for you,
You visited it when you needed--
Getting your fill, quenching your thirst.

And then you seceded.
Leaving me broken and shattered to pieces.

Here I sit, my heart beaten and tattered:
Smashed to pieces like dust around Saturn,
Spinning round and round waiting for the day—

The day you see the pieces you took from me
Will never build you into the person

You want to be.
