Avalon's yearly submission and reading periods are as follows:
Late August to mid-October for our Fall issue
Late January to mid-March for our Spring issue
The specific dates will change from year to year, and we will post those dates toward the beginning of the Fall semester and the beginning of the Spring semester for each respective review period.
Avalon submissions are currently closed for the Spring 2025 semester.
All submissions must be original and not part of an existing intellectual property (IP).
All submissions must be previously unpublished. (Avalon will be the first publisher of the work.)
All submissions must be the direct creation of the author or artist and not that of AI, such as ChatGPT. However, you can certainly use AI in the brainstorming and/or early drafting processes.
We accept simultaneous submissions (i.e., pieces submitted both to us and another literary journal), but please let us know if a piece of yours we are considering is accepted elsewhere. We cannot publish a piece that has been previously published or is scheduled to be published by another journal.
Include only one work in each submission. For example, if you want to submit three poems, you'll need to make three separate submissions.
If you ever wish to withdraw your work from consideration, that's no problem. Simply email us at avalon@su.edu to let us know.
For prose, poetry, and short plays:
No longer than 10 pages
Double spaced
Times New Roman or other standard font
Word Document format (such as .docx)
For visual art:
Only .jpg or .png files
Submissions must be high resolution (1080p or higher)
Photos of physical works of art are accepted, but make sure photos are framed and cropped appropriately (nothing in the background, no glare or shadow, photo is taken on a straight-on angle, etc.).
Any work published by Avalon is still the full intellectual property of the original author or creator. You own it! You're just letting us show it off to the world.
As always, the Avalon crew is reachable at avalon@su.edu. Please get in touch if you have any questions.
We are no longer accepting submissions for our Spring 2025 issue.
