Monday
Vocabulary – NEW!
We began working on word root meanings before the break.
We will continue with this process, and you will be tested on the roots once a week.
Once you achieve a 100, you do not have to take the quiz again that nine weeks.
You will have activity packets to help you learn the roots and add to your vocabulary.
You are responsible for continuing your vocabulary notebook.
Vocabulary
2nd 9 weeks – Units 1, and 2
3rd 9 weeks – Units 3, 4, 5, and 6
4th 9 weeks – Units 7, and 8.
Root quizzes are cumulative. You will have to remember the previous 9 weeks’ roots.
Independent Reading
You now have individualized reading goals. I have these in my Powerschool account if you have lost yours.
You need to create a sheet with a statement that lists your goal and have a parent sign the sheet each week.
You will keep this in your agenda or notebook and just add the next week’s date and signature.
EXAMPLE
Independent Reading
I confirm my child --------------- has read a minimum of 60 minutes each day this week. We have also discussed the reading selection, and spent time reading aloud.

“Fire and Ice”
Robert Frost
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
“Fog”
Carl Sandburg
The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.
“Self Pity”
DH Lawrence
I never saw a wild thing
sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself.
“kitchenette building”
Gwendolyn Brooks
We are things of dry hours and the involuntary plan,
Grayed in, and gray. “Dream” makes a giddy sound, not strong
Like “rent,” “feeding a wife,” “satisfying a man.”
But could a dream send up through onion fumes
Its white and violet, fight with fried potatoes
And yesterday’s garbage ripening in the hall,
Flutter, or sing an aria down these rooms
Even if we were willing to let it in,
Had time to warm it, keep it very clean,
Anticipate a message, let it begin?
We wonder. But not well! not for a minute!
Since Number Five is out of the bathroom now,
We think of lukewarm water, hope to get in it.
Mad Libs – Parts of Speech Review
Start by writing a story, fairy tale, or how to paragraph.
Use a highlighter or pen to mark at least ten important story words.
For each selected word look up the part of speech.
Create a clue list and list the parts of speech in which they appear in your story.
Rewrite your story leaving blanks for the selected words.
Mad Libs – POS Review
Each pod should share their Mad Libs.
Select one to represent the pod.
Each pod will submit a Mad Lib selection with the main words blank, and a clue sheet with the part of speech indicated for that clue.
We will then share the Mad Libs as a way to review grammar parts of speech this week.
Reflection: Select one of the poems we have read over the past two days. Write a description of that author. I want a snapshot of who he or she was, what life was like, and what he or she was thinking at the time the poem was written.
