Students will practice using online database features for research.
To prepare you for college and careers, we try to mimic the availability of resources you will encounter when not in the "workplace", in this case school. You have the luxury of being able to access research materials provided by our school library on-line, from the comfort of your home computer. Gone are the days of trudging across a campus in the middle of dark cold nights to gather research. Electronic databases are the "norm" in most high schools and colleges across the country. Periodicals used for research, like the New York Times and Time magazine, are now accessible in these electronic databases. This exercise will familiarize you with accessing our library databases on-line, how to search a variety of subjects, and familiarize you with tracking information you will need to give credit to sources you use. It is crucial that you give credit to "borrowed" information to avoid plagiarizing.
Electronic Library Instructions
Open the Library Orientation document shared with you in Google classroom. The document will ask you questions that will help you learn to navigate our electronic databases. Be sure to answer the questions by typing in the text boxes. Answers will be scored based on correctness. Ask for help if you do not understand a question. The answers will force you to "notice" features of the databases as well as information for research.
Targeting Database Resources
This document will help you decide which databases are suitable for various topics.
When you need more information after exhausting the library databases, the following search engines are better than generic "Google" searches:
