Week of Oct. 5 - 9

October 9:

Math: Your work today on 2 by 2 was really good! We will finish this practice on Tuesday to prepare for the Quiz on Wednesday.

Science: The seasons books that you created were excellent! This work translated well to the seasons quiz!

October 8:

Math: We moved to the 2 by 2 algorithm today. I can see the progression that you have made in such a short time that I know you are ready to move on! Whether you use the area model and/or the algorithm, you have to know your facts, so keep practicing!

Science: Sorting the picture and word cards into the different seasons generated some great conversations! Remember that we experience seasons due to Earth's orbit around the sun and the tilt of its axis. We will add lots of great facts to our seasons foldable book tomorrow to help us study.

October 7:

Math: We continued 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication today. It was so great to hear many of you say, "Can we work one more?" I cannot wait to see how you do on the quiz next Wednesday!

Science: We watched a video today showing how when hot water and cool water meet, the hot water will rise to the top and the cool water will sink to the bottom, just as with hot air and cool air. When air masses meet, they form fronts. When a warm air mass meets a cold air mass, the warm air will slide over the cold air, raising temperatures and forming stratus clouds which will drop slow, steady rain. When a cold air mass meets a warm air mass, the cold air is more dense, so it will push the warm air up, dropping temperatures, and bringing on stormy weather.

October 6:

Math: We introduced 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication today! Using the area models helped us to see how one problem is actually four, and we were able to solve the problems very easily. I have attached a photo of the problem we worked yesterday. Keep practicing your facts!

Science: An air mass is a large body of air with the same temperature and moisture content throughout. We saw with the cup and paper demonstration and with the inflated and deflated balloons that air has mass and takes up space. Check out the cool video below:

October 5:

Math: Many of you did an amazing job on the multiplication independent practice! We start 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication tomorrow!

Science: We finished our lesson on wind. The "What Causes Wind?" diagram was great to help us see how WARM AIR RISESand COOL AIR SINKS. The cool air takes the place of the warm air which caused wind.
