Week of Oct. 13 -16

October 16:

Math: We worked some division problems together and with partners that really made us stop and think about what we were really looking for. The division wasn't too bad; you were able to find the factors of a certain number by skip counting pretty well. The difficulty came when we were left with a remainder. What we do with the remainder depends on what the question asks for.

For example:

"60 students will be taking a trip to the zoo. The vans that they will ride in to get there can hold a maximum of 7 students. How many vans will be needed to transport all of the students to the zoo?"

You found that 8 x 7 = 56 and 9 x 7 = 63. So 60 students divided by 7 students in each van = 8 vans needed with a remainder of 4 students (60 - 56 = 4). However, since we need all of the students to go, we will need to get an extra van for those 4 students, so our final answer would be 9 vans instead of 8.

Science: You will do an amazing job on the Unit Test on Tuesday! Look over the review question packet that we finished today, complete the homework (that is due on Thursday now), and study all of Part 2 (pages 31-41). Good luck!

October 15:

Math: We started division today. We saw some numbers that will not divide equally with other numbers. Whatever is left over is called the remainder. When you see problems that mention "needs", "needed", or "least number", you know that the remainder is needed, and you will need to add another package, pack, box, etc., to your quotient.

Science: The weather map activity was a great way to show the weather symbols. Keep studying part 2.

October 14:

Math: I am so proud of how well so many of you did on the Math Quiz! There are some who struggled on the September Quiz but made great improvement on this Quiz! Your hard work is paying off, so congratulations! If you struggled on this quiz, keep practicing the facts, complete the homework, and stay focused in class.

Science: The Unit Test Review is going very well. I am proud of those who are taking this seriously. Your hard work will pay off next week when you show your intelligence on the test.

October 13:

Math: Most of you did an amazing job on the Multiplication practice! For those who are having some difficulty with it, remember to decompose the smaller number into 2 separate problems when multiplying. If needed, please use the area model to assist you in solving the problems.

Science: Looking at the weather maps today and using the map symbols was a great way to help us predict the weather in certain areas. We started the Unit Test Review today which went really well! Keep studying all of Unit 2 to be prepared for the test next Tuesday.
