Week of Jan. 5-8

Friday, January 8:

Math: Don't forget that a dollar is made up of 100 cents, and when a dollar is split into 4 parts, you get 4 quaters which equal 25 cents each. Converting a fraction without a 10 or 100 in the denominator could be done by using an EFT.

Science: Sound travels in waves. The sound energy stations were a great way for us to explore this type of energy. When blowing through the end of a straw, we noticed that the longer the straw, the lower the pitch, and the shorter the straw, the higher the pitch.

SLOW vibration = LOW pitch

FAST vibration = HIGH pitch

Thursday, January 7:

Math: Looking at money, we see that we write monetary values to the tenths and hundredths. Be careful when counting money, and be sure to double checking your work.

Science: The light energy stations were a lot of fun! We saw that shadows are created not by the light but by the object that is blocking the light. When light hits water, it bends or refracts, causing an object to appear both magnified and broken when placed in water. Check out the photo below.

Wednesday, January 6:

Math: The place value directly to the right of the tenths place is the hundredths place. Please make sure that you label the place values every time that you write a decimal.

Science:

Conductors are objects that allow heat to pass through easily (metal, keys, glass, etc.).

Insulators are objects that do not allow heat to pass through easily (koozie, oven mitt, coat, plastic, wood, e! tc.).

Tuesday, January 5:

Math: We began learning about decimals today. The place value directly to the right of the ones place is the tenths place.

Science: Thermal energy (heat) is the energy of the motion of particles in matter. We demonstrated the flow of energy by sitting still on the carpet for one minute. The carpet around us was cool, but the area of carpet that we were sitting on was now warm. This is due to the fact that heat travels from the warmer object (body) to the cooler object (floor).
