Week of Oct. 19 - 23

October 23:

Math: It is so exciting to hear so many of you wanting to participate in the division problems using area models! You are starting to understand why division works and not just learning tricks to solve for numbers. This enthusiasm will only help you to understand division better and will help you to love math even more!

Science: I enjoyed going to the Planetarium this week, and I hope that you did too. We started talking about forms of energy today, and y'all listed several (mechanical, electrical, light, thermal, sound). We also went to a great website that we will continue to look at on Monday regarding renewable and nonrenwable resources of energy. Check out the website below as well as on my Symbaloo:

October 22:

Math: We had a lot of great practice today using the area model when solving division problems. I am excited to see all of the great thinking that is taking place!

Science: Looking at the constellations and learning of the mythology behind them was very cool! Your drawings of the stars were outstanding. I will be placing many of those and the moon phases/eclipses papers on the Academic All-Stars wall!

October 21:

Math: Using the base ten blocks was a great way to act out division and visually see why it works. The area model may look intimidating at first, but it will help you to understand division instead of relying on tricks to just get an answer. We will continue to practice for a couple of weeks.

Science: The Planetarium visit was so much fun! We were able to use the moon balls to demonstrate the moon phases and the moon ball, Mr. Sun, and the glob to demonstrate solar and lunar eclipses. We look at the constellations tomorrow!

October 20:

Math: We completed a few more problems on division. Be careful with what the question asks for, and you will be successful.

Science: Many of you did very well on the Unit Test! I am proud of how hard you worked and the knowledge that you displayed. If you had trouble, I will be sending a practice packet with weather questions to help you.

October 19:

Math: Division can get tricky. There are times when everything will divide evenly, and nothing will be left over. However, there are other times when we will be left with a remainder, and we will need to do something with it. We saw yesterday that there are certain items that we will not split into fractions (dominoes, flowers, etc.), but there are items that can be split into fractions (fabric, tape, etc.). However, we will only split the item into parts when the question and details indicate to do so. We will continue to practice these types of questions for a couple of weeks so that we can become confident in our solving of them.

Science: You are ready for tomorrow's test! I am so proud of your hard work and efforts when completing the review questions and warmups. You will do an amazing job! Good luck!
