MakerSpace

Our educational goal should be to provide the type of environment that helps students to become producers (creators, makers) instead of mere consumers. Who gets paid? The consumer? The producer? Which role is engaged in innovation, solving problems, making the world a better place? How is the district providing the resources for the "maker movement?"

What is a MakerSpace?

Every STEM Teacher Should Visit:

  • C-STEM Center: This provides free STEM curriculum for middle school and high school STEM courses from the University of California, Davis.

  • The center recently launched RoboBlockly, a Web-based robot simulation that generates C++ code to control real robots.

  • Project Lead the Way: This is a non-profit that provides help to 8000 schools in delivering STEM programs. School membership provides teacher training, use of their curriculum for multiple subjects and “amazing software packages for our students,” says Round Rock’s Bonds, whose district is a member.

  • STEM-Works: This is an initiative of the School of Engineering at Southern Methodist University. This program supports volunteers working in local communities to increase STEM skills and provides STEM activities in multiple subjects.
