Day 4

Avui hem visitat el recinte educatiu més emblemàtic i amb més història de Portugal, la Universitat de Coïmbra. Aquesta universitat va ser fundada l'any 1290 pel rei Dionisio I de Portugal i acull més de 25 mil estudiants, amb la comunitat d'estudiants internacional més gran del país. Al llarg de la seva història ha tingut un paper destacat en els moments polítics, socials i culturals més rellevants de la història de Portugal. 

El 2013, la Unesco va triar el campus històric de la Universitat de Coïmbra com a Patrimoni de la Humanitat.

Com a tradició distintiva, els seus estudiants poden portar com a uniforme d'ús diari una túnica negra que el primer any de carrera arrosseguen per terra, a mesura que avancen de curs la van escurçant fent-hi plecs i, d'aquesta forma, es pot identificar a quin curs universitari pertanyen. A més, porten una carpeta amb una cinta d'un color concret que indica a quina facultat van i quina carrera estudien.

La Universitat està formada per vuit facultats, d'acord amb els diferents camps de coneixements,, la majoria d'elles poden visitar-se:

• Facultat de Lletres

• Facultat de Dret

• Facultat de Medicina

• Facultat de Ciències i Tecnologia

• Facultat de Farmàcia

• Facultat d'Economia

• Facultat de Psicologia i Ciències de l'Educació

• Facultat de Ciències de l'Esport i Educació Física

Durant la visita a algunes facultats et vas imbuint de metodologies, recursos i eines utilitzades al llarg del temps per l'aprenentatge, tot veient la seva evolució i adaptació als temps actuals.

Per acabar, hem visitat la biblioteca Joanina, una biblioteca de 3 pisos construïda el segle XVIII que juga un paper molt important dins el campus. Aquesta biblioteca alberga més de 70.000 exemplars en el seu interior i guarda els principals llibres antics de la Universitat. Actualment, hi ha un edifici més modern que s'utilitza com a biblioteca principal per l'ús habitual dels estudiants.

Today we visited the most emblematic and historic educational site in Portugal, the University of Coimbra. This university was founded in 1290 by King Dionisio I of Portugal and is home to more than 25,000 students, with the largest international student community in the country. Throughout its history, it has played a prominent role in the most important political, social and cultural moments in the history of Portugal.

In 2013, UNESCO chose the historic campus of the University of Coimbra as a World Heritage Site.

As a distinctive tradition, its students can wear a black tunic as their daily uniform, which they drag on the floor during the first year of their degree, and as they progress through the course, they shorten it by making pleats, and by doing this, it is possible to identify which university year they belong to. In addition, they carry a folder with a ribbon of a specific color that indicates which faculty they attend and which degree they are studying.

The University is divided in eight faculties, according to the different fields of knowledge, most of them can be visited:

• Faculty of Arts

• Faculty of Law

• Faculty of Medicine

• Faculty of Sciences and Technology

• Faculty of Pharmacy

• Faculty of Economics

• Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences

• Faculty of Sports Sciences and Physical Education

During the visit to some faculties you will be imbued with methodologies, resources and tools used all over the time for learning, and you will see their evolution and adaptation to current times.

Finally, we visited the Joanina Library, a 3-floors library built in the 18th century that played a very important role in the campus. This library contains more than 70,000 copies inside and keeps the main old books of the University. Currently, there is another modern building that is used as the main library for regular use by students.
