More about
Two rainbow flags donated by Bill Bremner, one by Midland Cooperatives.
'Rode Valken' flag - The RODE VALKEN is a progressive and democratic youth movement in Flanders. Its origins date back to 1923. They are part of the International Falcon Movement – Socialist Educational International.
Les Faucon Rouge - In France, the Red Falcons emerged in 1930 , driven by socialist activists. They are aligned to their concept of the "Children's Republic," - the organization of summer camps governed according to the methods of the "socialist ideal," democracy, respect for children's choices, and the realization of collective projects.
Rainbow flags have been used by Woodcraft Folk from it's founding because of it's close association with the Co-operative Movement. The rainbow flag has been the cooperative emblem since 1921 when the International Co-operative Congress of World Co-op Leaders met in Basel, Switzerland to identify and define the growing cooperative movement's common values and ideals to help unite co-ops around the world.
How they became part of our 100 Objects
Bill Bremner donated flags and banners and also helped demonstrate the tent while it was being photographed. One of his flags is planned to become Birmingham Woodcraft flag:
'I think this would be a great idea to repair flag & use at camp! Not sure how the calico will work as flying flags are usually similar both sides - but presume you will have some artwork from the pioneers for that? I think this flag dates back to the 50’s so has quite a history - nice woodcraft was supporting the rainbow flag way back then! All I would ask is that perhaps somewhere it could say on it ‘previously Watersmeet (Newham) woodcraft'.
