During '100 Objects Spanning 100 Years' we discovered four film reels in Cudham Woodcraft Folk Archives in need of digitising. They had not been viewed for many decades and turned out to be rare footage of film from camps in 1939, 1946, 1949 and possibly as early as 1929. We have collated some of our historic collection of woodcraft and international camp films below.
'Unsere Lagerkapelle spielt auf' is a film we have not yet been able to trace for certain. There is a probability this is footage from the 1929 Seekamp "Children's Republic" International Camp. The sun symbol (no trees) and red falcon are visible, which would have been illegal after 1933 following 'Protection of People and State (Feb 1933)' Decree, in which The Red Falcons were declared 'enemies of the state' in Germany. The location looks like it could be Seekamp near Kiel.
The Woodcraft Folk, an international outdoor movement at a mass camp at Symonds Yat in the Wye Valley, Herefordshire. A man, sitting on the ground, facing left in the picture, with a towel on his lap and rucksack between his feet, brushes shaving cream into a lather over his beard, then begins shaving, grinning at the camera. As a man at bottom right bangs a kind of gong or drum, a crowd of children run towards the camera in high spirits. The 1939 Woodcraft Folk Festival Camp was held at Liddington, near Swindon, it was a celebration of international friendship, and the camp that met the war. In August 1939, just weeks before the outbreak of World War 2, Woodcraft Folk were determined to hold their festival as a final, defiant stand for peace. Many children were already refugees or "Kindertransport" - children fostered by Woodcraft families. Many had to leave early as war clouds loomed.14:43
The 1946 Woodcraft Folk International Camp, held at Brighton, was the first major international gathering after the end of the Second World War. Woodcraft Folk wanted to rebuild the "broken bridges" between young people across Europe - The International Falcon Movement had paused during the war and many youth movement organizations were still struggling with post-war rations and travel restrictions. Woodcraft Folk pushed to host this camp to demonstrate international friendship. 14:09

Woodcraft Folk were looking for a film primarily aimed at young people working towards their heritage badge. The film was to follow the story of the Woodcraft Folk from the early days, through its history and looking to the future. Media Co-op used the wonderfully rich archive footage and some new material to produce a film that celebrates the Woodcraft Folk, their aims and values that remain solid, and the changes over the years that are leading to the future of the movement.
