‘How to set up camp’ game made by Joan Pover.
'Gamifying' camp set up. A 'How to' guide to setting up camp, taking account of different terrain, wind direction, and other factors. How close should the toilets be to the kitchen?
One camp or another, almost every other weekend, take our own food and cope for ourselves, I don’t really remember any adults…we had to declare we would get out and keep fit in mind and body that was the basis of it. Children had to be a little more independent and cooperative.
Joan Pover 2000
Joan Pover, now 103, has lived her life in Woodcraft Folk. Her father, Baron Fenner Brockway acknowledged his wife, Lilla Brockway, had the foresight "that those who intended to refuse military service should band themselves together". Founder of ‘No Conscription Fellowship’ in 1926, Baron Brockway presided over the annual conference of the No More War Movement at Birmingham and was the first Chair of the International Falcoln Movement.
Joan and her son Martin Pover have deposited many items to Woodcraft Archives UCL Special Collection, and she has been interviewed on many occasions, including an interview at the British Library. This particular game was loaned by Gillian Norris, who also has extensive material Joan used in groups, including an indexed notebook of all her Woodcraft games and activities.
At Sarrat we played with the game during Hackney camp June 2026.
