Here's what we've been up to in D111 this week!

ELA

  • We have continued learning about folk tales. We know that fables and myths fall under the category of a folk tale. Any folk tale is also considered to be in the genre of Traditional Literature. Now would be a great time to pick up a folk tale to read for the 30 book challenge!
  • We started our Word Work this week in class. Word work is when students are working on a set of words that have a targeted focus (ex- long a sounds, r controlled, roots/bases). This week we all worked on the same list to get to know each day's work. Students will stay on this list for 2 weeks before taking the spelling test. We are hoping this creates a deeper understanding and connection to the sounds of letters and spelling of words.
  • We started decorating our Writer's Notebooks on Friday! It's great to see the sources of inspiration they will have for writing a story later!

Math

  • This week we focused on rounding. This topic can be especially tricky for students to grasp. Click here for the parent resource we have regarding place value and rounding if you are interested in supporting this topic at home!
  • Round to the Nearest 10/100: This week we learned how to play the game Round to the Nearest 10. It's easy and fun and only requires a deck of cards! Click here for the directions! If you want to try out rounding to the nearest 100, click here for those directions!

Odds and Ends

  • Volunteering Sign Up: Click here if you are interested in seeing what the options are for in class volunteering and to sign up! I appreciate your interest in helping our classroom and students!
  • Picture Day: Fall Picture Day is Monday, September 17th. This will be a uniform picture day, not free dress. Click HERE to purchase online.
  • Chili Cook Off: Our 6th annual Chili Cook Off is coming up! This incredible event will take place on September 26th at 6:00 PM.
    • 6th-8th Grade - Click HERE to volunteer or donate for the event. Team up with your advisory teacher to take on other classes head to head for the best chili at our Chili Cook Off! We are asking for help with expert chili chefs, decorators, and servers!
    • Kinder-5th Grade - Click HERE to sign up. This year we are inviting our Kindergarten through fifth-grade families to join the event by contributing dessert and drink donations. We would love to see at least 5 desserts and 5 drinks donated per grade level. Desserts are best donated in individual wrappings (ie brownies versus a whole cake). Drinks are best as 2 liters or 12 oz cans.
  • Field Lessons and School Supplies: Click Here to make your donation today!
    • Great News! 3rd grade has already reached 45% of our School Supplies goal and 40% of our field lessons goal!
    • Note: When you make a monthly donation, our grade level campaigns are credited for the entire year in advance on our goal thermometer!
    • Note: All our school supplies have been purchased and our field lessons have been booked! Thank you families for the support!
    • Keep up the great work 3rd grade families!
