ELA/Science
This week we did the following Mystery Science lesson: Can selection happen without people? Students have been making great connections with the concept of selection and what we learned last week at our in-house field lesson with the Explorit Museum!
Students were placed into expert groups to learn about a specific animal or plant. The animals and plants are: bamboo, the Arabian Camel, the Red Kangaroo, and the African Dwarf Frog. Ask your Explorer which one they learned about!
We are learning all about the Great White Shark together. We pulled facts from a reading passage and a video clip. Our next steps will be to compile these facts into one informational writing piece.
Students will be taking their informational writing assessment next week. The grade they receive will be reflected on their Trimester 2 report cards.
Math
Area and perimeter assessment data will be going home with your child in their Friday Folder. There is a note indicating their score and how it translates to a 3, 2, or 1 on their report card. If you or your child is interested in retaking, please email me. A study guide is attached as an outline for what to practice.
We are currently working on the topic of fractions. Students practiced showing it as a circle, rectangle, a set, and on the number line. A formative assessment (mini check-in) is in their Friday Folder.
Odds and Ends
Field Trip Permission Slip: Permission slips for our field trip to the State Capitol (Tuesday, March 12th) are going home in your child's Friday Folder. Please fill in all highlighted areas. CLICK HERE if you are interested in chaperoning.
Valentine's Day: As Valentine’s Day approaches I know that many students look forward to bringing in Valentines to pass out to their class. In our class, we will be passing out Valentines at the end of our day on Thursday, February 14th. If your Explorer does decide to bring in Valentines, they must include everyone by bringing a Valentine for each classmate. As your Explorer chooses their Valentines, please make sure to avoid any products that contain peanuts so that we can keep all Explorers in D111 safe! A class list of names will go home in your child's Friday Folder this upcoming week.
Student-Led Conferences: Starting Sunday, February 10th, you will be able to sign up for a conference time for trimester 2. CLICK HERE for the directions on how to sign up. We will be doing student-led conferences again so please be sure the time you sign up for, your child is available to come as well.
