ELA/Science

This we listened to the podcast Smash Boom Best - a podcast for kids where two things are versus one another. The people that go on the show need to persuade a judge on which one they think is better. We listened to Tacos vs. Pizza, then students jumped into their own opinion writing, presenting reasons and examples to support their opinion. We also listened to Super Strength vs. Super Speed. Ask your child which one they prefer!
We did a Mystery Science lesson where we learned about the invisible forces that help keep a bridge up. We then got to make our own paper bridges and used pennies to test its strength. Students planned and revised their bridges after they tested them to fix areas of weakness.

Math

This week we have continued our review of the math topics we've learned this past year. We revisited telling elapsed time, measurement using liters, milliliters, grams, and kilograms, and solving word problems.
Be sure to check your child's Friday Folder for their measurement assessment. On the cover letter, their score (/15) is indicated as well as the score that will appear on their report card (3, 2, 1). If you or your child is interested in a retake, it will happen during the week of April 23rd-April 26th. Please send me an email or Dojo message if that is the case.

Odds and Ends

Westlake Charter High School Town Hall: Join us on Wednesday, April 24th at 6:00 PM for a Town Hall meeting about the future Westlake Charter High School. Mr. Eick will share the vision and timeline for the high school, then families will have the opportunity to dream about what is possible for Westlake Charter High School.

Spring Picture Day: Spring picture day will be Friday, April 26th. All students will have free dress on Friday, April 26th. Only students who have prepaid AND filled out this form will be sent to the photographer to have their picture taken. Picture packets will go home before Spring Break. If you would like to have your student’s spring picture taken by Excel, please fill out this form AND prepay online or send payment in the packet. All 8th grade students should dress to impress - pictures for promotion certificates will be taken that day.

Meet Up at Natomas 5K: Already signed up for the Natomas 5K? Plan to meet us at 8:00 AM near registration on April 27th for a group photo and Westlake swag. Look for the Westlake flag. Not registered yet? It’s not too late.

AS Live Clubs: The spring season of clubs is upon us! Our middle school students, parent volunteers, and community volunteers are preparing an array of options: arts and crafts, improv, soccer, and fishing! Click HERE to see which clubs are being offered for your student’s grade level and to enter your student in the lottery for a spot. If you’re interesting in chaperoning a club led by middle school students (a great way to earn volunteer hours and support the program), please email live@westlakecharter.com. All clubs except for soccer need an adult chaperone.
