ELA/Social Studies

This week we learned about Economy. Using a world map, we discussed why countries import and export goods and services. We also looked at how strawberries are produced, from start to finish. Students made a lot of connections with the section that farmers can sell directly to consumers at farmer's markets. It sounds like a lot of our students have been to a farmer's market before!

Math

After the Measurement and Telling Time unit is over, we will have a period of re-engagment with all math topics we've learned this year before SBAC. Students will be taking a quick formative assessment for me to see what they have been able to retain over the months before deciding what topics we will need to focus in on. Some topics we will be going back to are: addition/subtraction with regrouping, solving word problems, area and perimeter, equivalent fractions, and telling elapsed time.

Odds and Ends

TOP SECRET PARENT HOMEWORK!: Going home in your child's Friday Folder is a sealed envelope containing top secret parent homework! Please keep the contents of this envelope a surprise. The directions are inside the envelope. Please complete and return the assignment by Friday, April 5th.

Spring NWEA: This upcoming week we will be finishing up Spring NWEA tests.

SBAC Practice: SBAC (CAASPP) testing is coming up soon! It will be in May. If you are interested in your child being exposed to the interface and practicing some of the released questions, CLICK HERE. You select "Guest Login" and "Guest Session" and then Grade 3. We will be incorporating practice in our classroom as well - however the more exposure, the better!

Spanish: Hello Second & Third Grade Explorer Families! This is your student's Spanish teacher, Mrs. Galvan. The International Festival is on Saturday, April 6th and your student is invited to sing a Spanish songs on the outdoor stage. If your student would like to participate please be near the stage by 3pm. We are scheduled to sing at 3:10, after the K/1 songs. No need to RSVP but we hope to see you there. ¡Gracias! Westlake Charter High School Town Hall: Join us on Wednesday, April 24th at 6:00 PM for a Town Hall meeting about the future Westlake Charter High School. Mr. Eick will share the vision and timeline for the high school, then families will have the opportunity to dream about what is possible for Westlake Charter High School.

Call for Coaches: This spring, we’re launching FUTSAL in our athletics program! Futsal is similar to indoor soccer; games will be played in our gym. We’re looking for adult and high school futsal coaches; please spread the word to help us recruit futsal coaches as well as kickball supporters. Click HERE for more information and to sign up!
