This week flew by! Here is what we've been doing in class:

ELA

  • We started working on our Bio Poems this week! It has been great seeing students think about themselves and fill in statements like, "Who wonders... who feels... who fears..." Once we get on chromebooks, we will type them up!
  • We worked on a "Guess who?" writing activity. Your child wrote down 5 facts about themselves. When you come in on Back to School Night, see if you can guess which one is your child's writing, just by reading the 5 facts!
  • We wrote about our Hopes and Dreams for third grade. Some students have hopes to grow in math, others have hopes to get better at basketball. Ask your child what they wrote about!

Math

  • This week we learned a lot about how to read a graph, filling in a tally, bar, picture graph, and line plot. While doing this, we've been getting to know each other more! Some data we've graphed has been: What's your favorite color, how many siblings, what's your favorite sport.

Breakout EDU

  • We did our first Breakout box of the year! Our class was able to successfully get all the codes for each lock which then allowed us to breakout! It took a lot of perseverance, communication, and patience to make this happen!

Odds and Ends

  • Friday Folders: In our class, the blue communication folder will go home every Friday and will need to be brought back on Mondays. Any papers that are for me need to be on the "Return to School" side and I will take them out.
  • ClassDojo: I love using Class Dojo to keep families in the loop on what's happening in the classroom! If you have not signed up for Dojo yet, be sure to do so! If you need another sign up paper, please let me know!
  • Back to School Night Details: We are looking forward to seeing all of our families at Back to School Night is this Wednesday, August 22nd!
    • Distraction Free: This is a parent-only event to allow for teachers and families to connect in a distraction free environment. Our BASE program will be open for FREE for all WCS students during back to school night. Click HERE to RSVP for BASE at Back to School Night.
    • Food Trucks: Masa Taco and Good Dog food trucks will be at our covered dining area from 4:45-7:10 pm so families have a food option for this busy evening.
    • Kinder through 5th grade families: We have two identical sessions, you only need to attend one. Session one is 6:00-6:30 pm, session two is 6:40-7:10 pm. Specialty teachers will be in their classrooms from 6:00-7:10pm - please stop by!
    • 6th-8th grade families: We have two identical sessions, you only need to attend one. Session one is 5:00-5:40 pm, session two is 6:00-6:40 pm. During these sessions, you will meet with your student’s core teachers and specialty teachers. Your students are creating your schedule for the evening.
  • Coaches Needed: Click Here to volunteer in our Explorer Athletics program! Volleyball and Flag Football in 6th-8th grades are launching in just a few weeks and we need assistant coaches. No matter what grade level your students are in, we can use your help! It is only two hours a week, please sign up today!
  • After-School Live: After-School Live Clubs are back this year, and easier to lead than ever! Earn volunteer hours by leading Explorers in joyful learning experiences after school. Click Click HERE for more information, and click HERE to show your interest. Email live@westlakecharter.com with questions.
  • Free and Reduced Meal Application: Each year, we ask families to complete a Free and Reduced Price School Meals (FRPSM) application. Please remember, we need every student to return the letter with a parent signature and the appropriate check-box selected. If you have not yet returned this letter, please return it by Back to School Night. Even if you choose not to complete the FRPSM application, we still need a letter back for each student so that we can ensure every family had the opportunity to complete the application.
