Here's what we've been up to in D111 this week!

ELA

  • This week, we wrote about a small moment. We are trying our best to tell our stories bit by bit, meaning we stretch out the moment and add in as many details as possible to our specific memory. Some memories students wrote about was: first recess, jumping off a rock in Hawaii, first churro ever in Disneyland, and adopting two cats.
  • We took our practice spelling test this week. Students get 10 words from the lists they practiced these past two weeks and there are 2 bonus words as well. The bonus words were unpracticed, but follow the same pattern as their actual words. In doing so, I can see if they've retained the spelling pattern they've been practicing. Bonus words do not count against students, they can only help their score.

Math

  • Along with place value and rounding, we are now diving into adding and subtracting with regrouping. I am encouraging students to use the model strategy to help them visualize what is happening when we add or subtract. It will also help when it comes to subtracting with regrouping. I will share a video via Dojo on what the "use a model" strategy looks like!
  • The estimation jars have been a hit in our class! We've really enjoyed looking at them and making a reasonable guess as to how many are in the container. Thank you for your help in sending those in!
  • We took our first formative on place value and rounding. In your child’s Friday Folder you will find a formative assessment on how they are doing so far. Please review it and use the following resources as needed:
    • Math homework pages
    • Math Resource for Parents
    • Freckle (Domain: Base 10)

    • Kinder-5th Grade - Click HERE to sign up. This year we are inviting our Kindergarten through fifth-grade families to join the event by contributing dessert and drink donations. We would love to see at least 5 desserts and 5 drinks donated per grade level. Desserts are best donated in individual wrappings (ie brownies versus a whole cake). Drinks are best as 2 liters or 12 oz cans.
