Students had finished off their last project with my co-operating teacher. They did their reward days the first rotation I was there, and then the next rotation is when I took over and started a new project with them.
Jean-Michel Basquiat Expressionist Self Portraits
I started the 3rd graders off by spending some time talking about expressionist and abstract art. Students were prompted to recognize and draw their partners differnt facial features after acting out an emotion chosen from a bag of 18 different emotions. Student were then shown a YouTube video about artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, as well as pictures of his work to discuss imperfect and unrealistc portraits.
We also learned how to express emotions through different size mark-making, as well as colors representing emotions. We did some practice portraits first, looking at ourselves into mirrors and drawing different emotions using markers, bold lines, shapes, and colors.
After looking at Jean-Michel, we look at another artist as inspiration for our backgrounds in our final paintings. Students were instructed to paint two layers: this first layer was with tempra paint. Students looked at some of Jackson Pollock's "drip" paintings and were connecting some of his techniques back to abstraction and expressionism.
Once our background layers were painted, we proceeded with our portrait. The 3rd graders were promted to think about a memeory that made them feel big emotions: good or bad. They used tempra paint sticks to draw out their eotion uring that memory, and were told to keep in mind that they don't have t be perfect or realistic!
