Unit 1: collage & composition
At Central High School, I taught three periods of the level one Art Foundations course. Students were introduced to the very basics of art-making. This included the elements/principles of art, collage, sculpture, and drawing/painting. The curriculum also included a photography unit. I was fortunate to take over these classes a little after the Spring semester began in February 2025. Students were just barely being introduced to the collage & composition unit. For their unit project, students were asked to create a collage depicting a concept of their choosing, along woth a few elements, principles, and some collage techniques. Students also participated in class critiques and self reflections after every final unit artwork.
Unit 2: sculpture — cardboard
This unit took up most of our time, as it was very material based. Students were introduced to a range of sculpture media including cardboard, clay, and copper metal etching.
First, students were taught a bunch of different cardboard building techniques to later make a cardboard project of choice using a few of the texture techniques.
Unit 2: sculpture — clay
For the second part of the sculpture unit, students were given the very basics of clay and ceramic art-making. For their clay project, they made a pinch pot using the pinch technique and were required to include a texture of some sort. Students were encourgaed to get really creative and utilize the slip and score technique, as well as a variety of texture tools for their pinch pots. Later, they were able to glaze and learn the basics of glaze ware.
Unit 2: sculpture — metal etching
The last part of the sculpture unit included copper metal etching. Students received a 2 in x 2 in plate of copper and drew a design overtop with sharpie. I performed the acid bath over the weekend and students saw their drawing come to life above the copper. Students later had the option of punching a hole in their plate and attaching jump rings for either a keychain, earrings, or a necklace.
unit 2: sculpture — exhibition
Students were able to showcase one of the three sculpture works they made in the glass cases by the student entrance. Most importantly, students gained a better understanding of what it means to prepare and present their artwork.
Unit 3: drawing & painting
We ended the semester at the final choice artwork for the drawing & painting unit. Students had spent countless class periods practicing with a variety of drawing media, including graphite, charcoal, colored pencils, and chalk pastels. Students also learned different watercolor techniques and how to use/mix/blend acrylic paint. Students participated in a number of line drawing activities, as well as still life drawing with fake fruit and classroom still life objects using all the drawing and painting media. For the final artwork, students had the freedom of creating an artwork depicting whatever idea/subject they desired, using whichever material(s) they pleased.
