spring 2022 - fall 2023
Throughout my Art Education studies, I have observed and taught as a preservice teacher at Prairieview Ogden South Elementary School in Ogden, IL, and Stratton Elementary Academy of the Arts, as well as Centennial High School in Champaign, Illinois. I also co-facilitated and co-taught the Curtis C. Nash Summer Art School for Children at UIUC's School of Art and Design! These experiences have taught me so much about what it means to be an educator, as well as what it means for students to have an outlet for their creative endeavors, and even what it means to be a teaching artist.
I have countless memories from teaching when students showed me just how creative they can get with the material presented. This was not something I was expecting, as I had forgotten what it was like to have the mind of a child, and just how many possibilities they can think of. Teaching in these two different school districts had its own rewarding aspects not just with individual students, but the community that comes with art teaching and art making. As well as this, I have learned about the patience needed when working with children, along with their unpredictability. This is relevant even for students in the secondary grades, as these years are the start of the most transformative paths ahead of them. This had made me more adaptable to certain situations in the classroom, and I have also acquired better listening skills with the children. Listening is one of the main components of teaching, and it sounds so simple but it is something that is not done effectively enough with children.
