Students had finished off their last paintings with my co-operating teacher, superheros! They did their reward days the first rotation I was there, and then the next rotation is when I took over and started a new project with them.
Clay Superhero Emblems
This lesson was an extension of the superhero paintings done with my co-operating teacher. The 2nd graders were introduced to what an emblem is, as well as symbolism. We then sketched three different designs of what their emblem will look like, using their superhero paintings as a point of departure.
Students practiced some simple building techniques with play-doh before getting their hands on the air dry clay! Once our emblems were done and dried, we attached them to necklaces to make them wearable!

Moving Construction Paper Robots
After wearing around our superhero emblems, we started the next project: construction paper robots with moving parts! Students were first shown examples of robots in our everyday lives, and then were prompted to sketch their own robot. They were asked to think about the shapes that make up their robots in their sketches, as well as give them a name and a function. We proceeded to cut our robot shapes out of construction paper, decorate our pieces, and attach them with brads!
Students finished their robots by attaching one final brad in the middle of their robot and through a solid colored sheet of contruction paper as a background. They also decorated their background and were prompted to think about how much they would sell their robot and who it'll be useful for. Check out more second grade robot creations on the right!
