Unit 1: soft sculptures
I taught one period of the sculpture studio class at Central. Students can only take this class if they previously passed the art foundations course. I met the sculpture students during the sewing practice portion of the second unit, soft sculptures. Students were taught four different sewing techniques to later apply to their unit project, which was a soft sculpture of any kind. Students first made a pincushion to further practice their sewing skills, as well as pattern-making and planning. Students were then able to use the pin cushion alongside their project sewing. The soft sculptures can be of any concept, size, and any felt/textile they pleased.
Unit 2: abstract wire sculptures
After spending weeks sewing, students got a feel for paper mache and abstraction during this next unit. Students were given wood bases, wire, nylon tights and paper mache mix to create an abstracted sculpture of their choosing. The deisgn/ideation was all upto the students, and they came up with some pretty interesting interpretations!
Unit 3: OSA (open studio artwork)
This was the class final, otherwise known as the Open Studio Artwork. Students can use any materials we have used in past class projects, as well as experiment with new materials. Students had complete freedom with ideation, concept, and media.
