Olympics 2024. The Olympics are a spectacular celebration of world society. They are a positive-sum success for world society as a whole. At the same time they are a constant-sum medal success for competing individual nations. The Olympics are a specific projection of world society, sharing some features with world society and having some features distinct. Gordon Burt explores these matters in three recent reports - before, during and after the games.

The structure of the world system
The history of the hosting of the Olympics and the winning of medals reflects the structure of the world system. There is a hierarchy of systems. There is a core and a periphery. The core consists of the European system and the North Asia system. The European system consists of Europe and the Europe Empire System. The Europe Empire System consists of the European Europe Empire System and the non- European Europe Empire System.
The five permanent members of the UN Security Council consist of three from Europe (UK, France and Russia); one from the European Europe Empire System (USA); and one from North Asia (China). These five countries have all hosted the Olympics – in total on 12 out of 29 occasions. In the medal table for the 2020/1 Olympics they came first, second, third, fourth and tenth. In the medal table for the 2024 Olympics they came first, second, third, fourth and tenth (my current estimate).
The size distribution for medals is a stepped geometric series, becoming a Poisson.
The article by Feifei Li, Will G. Hopkins and Patrycja Lipinska provides an exemplary analysis of success in the Olympics medal table.
