Thursday, May 30, 2024: Trump convicted
Yesterday Donald Trump was found guilty. He emerged from the courthouse and said. He has been ahead of President Joe Biden in the polls. Will this guilty verdict change public opinion? Will he proceed to be adopted as the Republican candidate? … and will he win the presidency? Commentators declared “we are in uncharted territory”.

“The only thing keeping Biden going? Trump. President would be 20 points behind a less flawed opponent but next month’s unusually early debate could prove pivotal.” The Times, May 31 2024: 25.

Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels, a former porn star, before the election in 2016…
After he left the court, Mr Trump called the trial a “disgrace” and said that “the real verdict” would come on November 5th, the day of America’s election…
The former president has long argued that the judge is “corrupt” and that the case was “rigged”; he is sure to appeal against the conviction…

Trump: extremely negative about the other
Trump’s speech:
“If they can do this to me, they can do this to anyone.”

“US is a fascist state. …
… Biden’s our dumbest leader ever and judge is a devil …
… Trump verdict and repercussions for the West [five letters] …
… Uncharted territory. Donald trump is the first president of the United States, serving or former, to be convicted of a crime. Yet many Americans still want him back in the White House. [Editorial] …
… America will escape this Trump cult, but we have a along way to go. … Why I no longer fear another assault on the Capitol. [James Comey, former head of FBI]”
The Times, June 1, 2024: 1, 14-15, 28, 29, 36-37.
“They were “bad people”, “sick people”, “fascists”. Even by his own hyperbolic standards Donald Trump surpassed himself as he castigated those he accused of masterminding a Rigged” trial designed to derail his campaign to return to the White House. No one escaped his fury: the judge in the trial was a tyrant; the district attorney who brought the case against him was biased and a failure; Joe Biden was the dumbest, most incompetent president of the United States. Ever.” [Editorial]
The self-other value gradient
Opinion is partisan. The evaluation of an event depends not just on the nature of the event but on the relative locations of the evaluator and of the event in social space. A key factor is the value placed on the self and the value placed on the other. Typically there is a self-other value gradient.

The loser is less likely to say the election has been free and fair. The winner is more likely to say the election has been free and fair. As winners, Democrats are more likely to say the election was fair.

The links I have identified about Trump’s conviction simply give the same facts (I think). So I suggest there is not much here for you to look at, in relation to Trump. Sorry.

Self and Other, Positive and Negative
Currently I am finding the phrase Self and Other, Positive and Negative indicates a useful conceptual framework:
Israel and Palestine: self and other, positive and negative; 2023.
Nations and world: variation and self.
My research: a foundational approach
In my research I aspire to adopt a foundational approach. I have come to use the phrase Values, World Society and Modelling because I see these three terms as foundational to the study of society. Still further, I see Mathematical Social Science as providing the underlying conceptual foundations – see my book Conflict, Complexity and Mathematical Social Science.
Sets, functions and relations are basic concepts in mathematics. These concepts provide a definition of a system in abstract systems theory. A system is a set of relationships amongst a set of entities. A notion of values carries the notion of positive and negative. Currently I am finding the phrase Self and Other, Positive and Negative indicates a useful conceptual framework.
