This was one of the five portraits I did for this class. I started by sketching a rough oval and getting the proportions and layout of the features as right as I could. Then I worked on adding value to certain features, starting with the nose, then transitioning to the mouth. Then I worked on the eyes and glasses. Once I had the majority of my midtones down, I layered the charcoal on top of each other to depict value, such as the forehead lines and the smile lines. I added highlights to the glasses and certain areas on the nose with a white charcoal pencil.. I also included some contour lines in parts of the hair.
