Wingra - Lab Orders

For questions about labs, call lab and ask the staff. They are very helpful!

If you want a lab done at the point of care (e.g. you have a patient coming for diabetes follow up and you want their A1c to be processed right away so you can talk about the result and plan during their visit), change the priority to STAT

Labs that can be done at the point of care include A1c, UA, wet prep, KOH prep, rapid strep, rapid influenza (viral testing program), blood glucose, and CBC (or any component of CBC; results available within minutes to an hour)

Can make preference lists for labs you order most frequently, ask a faculty/senior resident

Transporting slides to the laboratory (KOH preps, ferning slides, parasite exams)

Ask your MA for a petri dish and slides. If MA unavailable, petri dish is located in drawer under pneumatic tube and microscope slides are available in the back storage room on a shelf on the wall facing the door

Place slide inside the dish. (the larger diameter disk is the cover)

Place a patient label on the cover.

Ask MA to carry labeled dish with the specimen inside to hand carry to the lab for processing.

If you need to add on a study to a urine sample (e.g. urine culture), keep in mind that they keep samples for 24 hours
