Using the System

The UNSW School of Chemistry Research Training and Safety System may be used by anyone to complete online modules as required by the School, Supervisors, Delegates, Technical and Professional Staff, etc.

UNSW STAFF AND STUDENTS WITH zIDs

When completing quizzes you must use your UNSW zID.

You may only request access to your record by logging in to the request form with your zID/zPass (see the ACCESS TO RECORDS page).

VISITORS, CONTRACTORS AND TEMPORARY USERS WITHOUT zIDs

Users who do not have UNSW zIDs should contact chemistryoperations@unsw.edu.au to request a temporary zID which can be used to complete the online modules.

You must use the temporary zID to complete quizzes.

If you join UNSW after completing modules with a temporary zID and are issued with a UNSW zID:

  • Please contact chemistryoperations@unsw.edu.au to ensure that your temporary zID records are transferred to your official UNSW zID record.

  • This may be the case for students or staff who, for example, are advised to complete modules before they arrive at UNSW.

  • If you complete induction modules before your arrival, those records can be used to support access requests when you arrive on campus are are issued with a zID and access card.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

The Research Training and Safety System is currently organised into three 'Nodes':

  • CHEMISTRY

  • CHEM_INSTRUMENTS

  • LOWER_CAMPUS_STORE

Each of the Nodes is comprised of modules which users may be required to complete. Modules are comprised of:

  • Required Documents such as:

    • Safe Work Procedures (SWPs)

    • Risk Management Forms (RMFs)

    • Training or induction videos

  • Quiz

Users are declared competent for a module when they have declared the required documents as read and passed the quiz (generally with a score of >= 85%). Competence for required modules forms the basis to allow users to perform particular activities (e.g. dispensing liquid nitrogen, pyrophoric reactions) or to use some School instruments and equipment.

The CHEMISTRY and LOWER_CAMPUS_STORE nodes also include 'Areas', which correlate to physical areas in the buildings. Each Area requires successful completion of certain online modules before a user is declared competent for that area. Competence in an Area forms the basis for granting someone swipe card access to that Area.

Users must read the required documents (or view videos) and declare them as read when submitting the quiz.

When a quiz has been submitted, that result will be written to the record for that zID.

Users who have submitted at least one quiz will have a record for their zID which they can request access to (see the ACCESS TO RECORDS page).

Users can use their record to track their progress in the system for various modules that they are required to complete (see the GUIDE TO INDIVIDUAL RECORDS page).
