The 800 seat Moores Opera House is arguably the finest university opera production facility in the country. Opened in 1997, it was designed to emulate the acoustic space of an old European opera house while providing the modern equipment demanded in today’s world. Boasting an enormous orchestra pit, full fly capacity and state of the art sound equipment, it allows performances of the largest operas while still maintaining a sense of intimacy. It gives young voices a chance to develop properly by not subjecting them to the demands of an acoustically unforgiving large hall. Featuring a movable, flexible-size orchestra shell, it also serves as the performance space for our orchestra, wind ensembles, choral groups, and chamber music. Visually it is dominated by a spectacular installation by artist Frank Stella that attracts visitors from around the globe.
The Dudley Recital Hall has delightful acoustics, but is a more intimate space than the majestic Moores Opera House, seating just over 200 audience members. Dudley is the venue for most of the student, faculty, and guest artist performances, as well as for lecture-recitals and guest lectures.
The Organ Recital Hall in the Fine Arts Building features a beautiful Beckerath Organ, and is one of six pipe organs on the UH campus. The hall is dedicated to the organ program’s students for their practice and performance use.
The Choral Recital Hall provides our choirs with an exceptional workspace, but also serves as a beautiful forum for intimate recitals. Like Dudley and the Opera House, the hall is equipped with a handmade Steinway grand piano and provides an excellent acoustic experience.
All rehearsal rooms and classrooms at the Moores School are soundproofed and equipped with high quality instruments, including handmade Steinway grand pianos.

Located in the library, the Beta Space is a flexible, multi-purpose study space geared towards performing arts students. With multimedia equipment, whiteboards, a piano keyboard, and recording microphone, the Beta Space is available by reservation for students of all majors.

Admissions into the University of Houston’s Theater and Dance Program is by audition only. Auditions are held each semester.
Students interested in majoring, minoring or working toward the dance certification may audition prior to being accepted into the University of Houston. However, prospective students will not be allowed to enroll into dance classes until they are accepted by the University and the Dance Program.
Admissions into the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music
In addition to meeting all requirements for admission to the University of Houston, all students seeking acceptance as music majors must apply separately to the Moores School and must pass an audition on their principal instrument or voice.
Voice applicants must include a vocal recording in their application to evaluate whether a student will be invited to attend a live audition. Recordings for voice students are subject to earlier application deadlines. Composition applicants must submit a composition portfolio, if available, as an upload into the online application.

If a student is interested in the college of the arts/architecture, ZONE B is recommended. It’s right across the street from the colleges. Also note that THE ARTS District is the “furthest” college(s) on campus. But as an Arts/Architecture student you will spend almost all of your time here at these buildings.
