Note: Cub Camp 2020 is now a virtual experience. It takes place August 17-19 for $40 that'll be added to tuition and fee bill for fall 2020.
Cub Camp helps ease the stress for first-year students transitioning to a large university. The retreat takes place the weekend before classes begin which also helps with the adjustment!
Cub Camp differs from orientation in that it’s not academically focused nor required. The focus of this 3-day program is to share what it truly means to have pride as a UH Cougar. The core values -- spirit, tradition, unity, and growth -- allow for each student to step out of their comfort zone, share emotional experiences with fellow campers, and most importantly, meet incredible friends who you’ll spend your college years with!
Freshman students can be a counselor too! Many campers return for a second year to become a Cub Camp Counselor.
You'll go through an extensive training process with fellow Cub Camp staff and walk away as a better leader because of it!
Generally, campers are divided into 4 camps -- yellow, purple, blue, and green. Each camp is led by 2 student Co-Chairs and 12 student Counselors. Each camp is named after a UH faculty, staff, or alumnus who has positively impacted students' success. Each namesake is nominated by students, faculty, and staff as a way to honor the passion and dedication for the Red and White!
Namesakes also have the opportunity to interact with and impact student camp staff and incoming freshman students in their camp over the course of the year and attend camp in August!

"My namesake and UH Board of Regents member, Paula Mendoza, has kept in contact all throughout my college experience! She has contributed to my class projects, connected me with some powerful businesswomen in the Houston area, and every so often, we catch up over a cup of coffee. One of the greatest connections I've made thus far!"

Camp counselors are selected months in advance to prepare every last detail -- chants, skits, banner designs, t-shirt logos, small group discussions, camp photoshoots -- all prior to the beginning of camp.
#WhyCamp posts every Wednesday on all social media platforms, posted by your fellow counselors!
“Cub Camp is where I met my current best friend, Crystal. From hundreds of campers, we were randomly assigned to the same bus, same cabin, and same room -- I guess it was meant to be! We saw each other every single day of our freshman year in college and never got tired of one another! Our friendship happily continues ‘till this day.”
