CAPS strives to make high quality mental health services accessible to students. A student's mental health is really important and CAPS works towards helping students achieve academic, personal, professional success. They are located on the second floor of the Student Services 1, but they are in the process of transitioning to the Health Center (across the Welcome Center). They are also now available at UH @ Sugarland.
Note: Services are available to the UH community via Teletherapy (phone or video) and via online workshops until further notice due to COVID-19.
In order to ensure that students receive proper assistance, CAPS require students to have a brief initial appointment. In this appointment, students will fill out a few forms and have a consultation with a clinician. This will help the clinician determine what type of service they should provide to best help the student to succeed.
Individuals meet weekly with one (or two) clinician(s) and other group members to explore new ways of coping, behaving, and interacting with others. Understanding Self and Others is an interpersonal process that group counseling focuses on. CAPS also offers psychoeducational group counseling (i.e. Emotional Skill Building) and Theme groups (i.e. Rainbow Coogs). There are no fees for currently enrolled students to participate in group counseling.
UH students who want help with personal concerns, individual counseling is an option for them to consider. Common client concerns include: depression, anxiety, stress, interpersonal conflict, identity concerns, and trauma recovery
Couples counseling is available for UH students. Only one of the partners need to be affiliated with UH. Clinicians work form a therapy model and tailor the treatment to work with specific goals the partners have in mind.
