Pinnacle Rock State Park

Pinnacle Rock State Park is a 400-acre park in Mercer County and is named for the 3100-foot sandstone formation that rises above the surrounding terrain. The park was established in 1938 when the Conservation Commission purchased 26 acres surrounding Pinnacle Rock. Trails, picnic shelters and other amenities were constructed by the Works Progress Administration and the park has since grown to almost 400 acres and includes Jimmy Lewis Lake.

Directions:

From Beckley, head south on I-77 for about 32 miles and take exit 9 for US-640. Turn right on US-640 west and drive 4.7 miles. Turn right on US-19 north and immediately turn left on Glenwood Park Road. In 1.5 miles, turn right on Old US-19 north and then left onto WV-20 south. In 6.5 miles, turn right on US-52 north. The park is on the left after 2 miles.

Falling Rock Trail:

Falling Rock Trail leads along the southeast side of Pinnacle Rock with great views of the towering ridge.

Overlook Trail:

Overlook Trail is a short paved trail that leads to stairs up to an overlook on Pinnacle Rock.

Turkey Rock Trail:

Turkey Rock Trail splits from Homestead Trail and makes a loop around its namesake rock outcrop.

There is an old home site along Turkey Rock Trail.

Overlook:

The overlook on Pinnacle Rock provides great views from the top.

Wildlife:

White bergamot (Monarda clinopodia)

Common chicory (Cichorium intybus) is an introduced species

Jack-o-lantern mushrooms (Omphalotus illudens)
