Plateau District

The Plateau District covers the southern half of the parkway in Virginia, stretching from Roanoke at milepost 106 to the North Carolina state line at milepost 216.

Points of Interest:

Mile Post 168.0: The Saddle Overlook - The Saddle is a ridge between two high points on Rocky Knob Mountain. The overlook provides great views of the Blue Ridge Escarpment and access to Rock Castle Gorge Trail. Looking in the opposite direction, Buffalo Mountain is visible. Mile Post 168.8: Rock Castle Gorge Overlook - Overlook above Rock Castle Gorge, more than 1000 feet below. The Rock Castle Gorge Trail can be accessed from this overlook. See my Rocky Knob page for more information.

Mile Post 169.0: Rocky Knob - Rocky Knob is a recreation area along the parkway with a large developed campground, picnic area, several overlooks, and trails ranging from easy to strenuous, including the Rock Castle Gorge National Recreation Trail. See my Rocky Knob page for more information.
