Mississippi Waterfalls

The Magnolia State is certainly not known for waterfalls, but I found a bunch in Clark Creek Natural Area, a very unique park in the southwest tip of the state. They do need to work on their waterfall naming.

Clark Creek First Waterfall:

The First Waterfall is a 15-foot falls on a tributary of Clark Creek in Wilkinson County. The waterfall is located in Clark Creek Natural Area, a state park. The hike to this one is pretty easy and just over a mile round trip.

To visit the falls, head west from Woodville on MS-24 for about a mile and turn left on Pickneyville Road. Go about 14 miles on this road (watch out for potholes) and turn right on Fort Adams Pond Road. The parking area is on the left in a quarter mile. Note that there is a fee for access, payable at a self-serve kiosk behind the restrooms.

Hike down the Clark Creek Trail, which is an old road for just over a half a mile to a spur trail on the left leading a short ways to the waterfall.

Clark Creek Second Waterfall:

The Second Waterfall is a 10-foot falls on a tributary of Clark Creek in Wilkinson County. The waterfall is located in Clark Creek Natural Area, a state park. The hike to the falls is about 1.5 miles round trip and moderate though getting to the base is difficult.

To visit the falls, follow the directions to First Waterfall above and continue on Clark Creek Trail an eighth of a mile further to another fork and go left on the short spur to a boardwalk viewing deck of the falls. Getting to the base is a really steep scramble down.

Clark Creek Third Waterfall:

The Third Waterfall is a 25-foot waterfall on a tributary of Clark Creek in Wilkinson County. The waterfall is located in Clark Creek Natural Area, a state park. The hike to the falls is about 2 miles round trip and difficult.

To visit the falls, follow the directions to First Waterfall above. Just before the spur trail to First waterfall, cross the tributary and pick up the Primitive Trail. Follow this trail for under half a mile to the crossing of another tributary. The third waterfall is a short ways downstream. There is no easy way to get to the base; it's a very difficult climb down.

Clark Creek Fourth Waterfall:

The Fourth Waterfall is a 30-foot falls on Clark Creek in Wilkinson County. The waterfall is located in Clark Creek Natural Area, a state park. I think this is the tallest waterfall in the park and the only one that is on Clark Creek itself. The hike to the falls is about 2.5 miles round trip and moderate with a creek walk to reach the waterfall.

To visit the falls, follow the directions to the Second Waterfall above, but go right at the second fork to stay on Clark Creek Trail. At the next fork, go right to get on Waterfall Trail and follow for about a half-mile to the end at Clark Creek. Get in the creek and go right to follow the creek upstream. There is a confluence in a short distance; follow the creek on the left about a quarter mile to this waterfall.

Clark Creek Fifth Waterfall:

To visit the falls, follow the directions to the Fourth Waterfall above. After you get in Clark Creek and reach the confluence, follow the tributary on the right about a quarter-mile to the base of the waterfall.

Clark Creek Sixth Waterfall:

The Sixth Waterfall is an 8-foot falls on a tributary of Clark Creek in Wilkinson County. The waterfall is located in Clark Creek Natural Area, a state park. The hike to the falls is about 2.5 miles round trip and moderate with a creek walk to reach the waterfall.

To visit the falls, follow the directions to the Second Waterfall above, but go right at the second fork to stay on Clark Creek Trail. At the next fork, go right to get on Waterfall Trail and follow for about a quarter-mile to a shelter covered in graffiti. A path behind the shelter leads down the tributary near the base of the Sixth Waterfall. You are not far above the Fifth Waterfall, but it's very difficult to get down from this point.

Clark Creek Seventh Waterfall:

The Seventh Waterfall is a 10-foot falls on a tributary of Clark Creek in Wilkinson County. The waterfall is located in Clark Creek Natural Area, a state park. The hike to the falls is about 3 miles round trip and difficult. This one was unnamed on the map, so I continued with the naming convention.

To visit the falls, follow the directions to the Fourth Waterfall above, but at the end of Waterfall Trail, turn left on Primitive Trail, following Clark Creek downstream but not getting in the creek. Go about a mile to where the trail crosses right above the small falls. It's fairly easy to climb down to the base of this one. You can go back the way you came or it's not much longer to finish off the loop.

Clark Creek Eighth Waterfall:

The Eighth Waterfall is a 30-foot falls on a tributary of Clark Creek in Wilkinson County. The waterfall is located in Clark Creek Natural Area, a state park. The hike to the falls is about 3 miles round trip and difficult. This one was unnamed on the map, so I continued with the naming convention.

To visit the falls, follow the directions to the Seventh Waterfall above; Eighth Waterfall is immediately downstream. Continue on Primitive Trail over the top of Seventh Waterfall and you will soon be able to see Eighth Waterfall. It has two sections and you can climb down from the trail for a better view, but it's steep going down.

The Ninth Waterfall is a 15-foot falls on a tributary of Clark Creek in Wilkinson County. The waterfall is located in Clark Creek Natural Area, a state park. The hike to the falls is about 3 miles round trip and difficult. This one was unnamed on the map, so I continued with the naming convention.

To visit the falls, follow the directions to the Third Waterfall above and continue on Primitive Trail a total of a mile. The trail descends steeply to a tributary and begins following it downstream. Follow the tributary upstream a short ways to the base of the waterfall.
