Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint

Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint is a 114-acre park that encompasses its namesake volcano. The extinct cinder cone volcano is located just east of Bend, making it one of the few cities in the United States with a volcano within the city limits. Short but steep hiking trails lead up to the summit as well as a paved road for those who wish to drive up to the top. From the summit, there are wonderful views of the surrounding high desert county and the Cascade Mountains to the west, including Three Sisters, Mount Bachelor, Mount Jefferson, and Mount Hood. The land was given to the state in 1927 in memory of Terrence Hardington Foley and additional tracts were purchased in 1941.
