The Appalachian Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest stretches from Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the west to the Black Mountains in the east and north to Roan Mountain on the Tennessee state line. The district includes land in Avery, Buncombe, Madison, Mitchell, Watauga, and Yancey counties.
