Responding to a Suffering World
Heroes and Saints enables students to focus on the life stories of historical and modern-day heroes, saints and faith-filled leaders. Students explore why these stories are important and what they can teach us today. Students analyse ordinary people who have shown extraordinary leadership by enacting the Principles of Catholic Social Teaching. They learn why and how people speak against injustices and where their calling for social justice came from. Students explain how faith plays a role in the heroes’ actions. Students investigate modern-day leaders whose lives have been committed to alleviating the suffering of others such as Sr Brigid Arthur and make links to Living Justice Living Peace. Students explore the challenges faced by Catholic communities in maintaining their schools during a period of limited government support and will gain insight into the importance placed on Catholic education by these communities, focusing on the preservation of faith and cultural identity. They explore the mission of St. Mary MacKillop of the Cross and the influence she had on Catholic Education in Australia. Students are challenged to reflect on ways their faith, beliefs and strengths guide their leadership choices and how they too can stand up to injustices.
