Duke of Ed is a program overseen by an external agency that will be facilitated by Marian College.
Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme has 3 levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold). At the Bronze level offered, students are required to complete three components, including practical recreation, a skill, and volunteer service. All components will be addressed in class, however there will be additional requirements for some components to be completed outside of school hours.
A fourth component is an overnight “adventurous journey” which requires students, in groups, to carry food, water, and equipment required to complete their journey safely. Class time will focus on survival skills, bush skills, hiking skills, environmental preservation tasks and physical fitness tasks to ensure students are prepared for the adventurous journey.
Other benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh include completing qualifying components to university early entrance schemes and scholarship applications. Additionally, this course provides an opportunity to disconnect from screens and interact with the real world, as well as being highly regarded for future employment opportunities.
Students will be required to submit an application to enrol in this unit and final approval will be based on application.
