At Marian College, Explore for Years 9 and 10 is built on an Age, Not Stage philosophy, recognising that each student’s learning journey is unique. This program offers flexibility and personalisation within a structured curriculum to prepare students to flourish, guided by our Marian Graduate Statement.
"Marian learners graduate with a love of lifelong learning, the skills to adapt in a changing world, and the courage to address global challenges while building community wellbeing."
Explore provides guided choice: students continue to engage with all key learning areas for a well-rounded education while selecting from a diverse range of semester-based elective courses that reflect their interests, strengths, and future aspirations. Electives, aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, offer different levels of challenge, with many classes combining Year 9 and 10 students. Students can:
Pursue advanced or accelerated pathways, including early completion of VCE Units.
Consolidate key skills through targeted electives.
Choose applied learning electives to prepare for the VCE Vocational Major.
This model encourages student agency, deeper engagement, and the development of independent learning skills.
Importantly, students are supported every step of the way through subject selection conferences, guidance from our Careers team, and personalised support from Homeroom teachers. This collaborative approach ensures that choices align with student interests and long-term goals, whether academic, vocational or personal.
In addition, all students participate in a holistic wellbeing program focusing on mental health, social connectedness, physical health and spirituality, helping students develop independence, resilience and self-awareness.
The Explore program helps students grow in confidence, explore new possibilities, and take ownership of their learning as they transition into Aspire (Years 11–12) with purpose and confidence.
