Mathematics of Theme Parks is designed for students who loves mathematics, especially algebra and graphing, as it will challenge and extend your understanding, perfectly preparing you for VCE Mathematical Methods and VCE Specialist Mathematics. It is recommended for students with an 'A' grade average in Year 8 Mathematics and are studying Year 9 Extension Mathematics or 10 Mathematics for Methods.
You'll build a solid foundation in key areas by exploring the mathematics behind thrilling theme park attractions. We'll dive into the unit circle and trigonometric sine and cosine graphs, uncovering how they describe circular motion and oscillations. You'll also master quadratic graphs to model trajectories and parabolic shapes. To bring these concepts to life, you'll tackle exciting design challenges, including creating an 'Angry Birds' page and even designing your own roller coaster. We'll even include an excursion to Luna Park to see these mathematical principles in action!
All 'Mathematics of Theme Parks' students will need a scientific calculator (which you should keep from Year 8). In addition, all students will require a Texas Instruments TI-Nspire II CAS Calculator (cost approximately $250). This powerful tool will be essential for the construction and analysis of the mathematical models that underpin these real-life games and rides. You'll continue using this CAS calculator in your future VCE studies.
