"Lady Daine lost an eye to one of her own, so did I."
Thomas was only five years old when he was caught up in the war. Though he survived, he lost his right eye, leaving him with a permanent reminder of something that happened when he was far too young to fully understand it. Having few friends his own age, Thomas finds comfort in relating to Daine, who also lost an eye during the conflict. He looks up to her greatly, admiring her strength and the confidence with which she carries her scars. To Thomas, Daine is proof that he doesn't have to hide what happened to him. He hopes that one day he can carry himself with the same confidence as Daine, unafraid to be seen exactly as he is.
