In the Netherlands, they are 6 major types of waste. These are:
GFT
PMD
Glass
Empty batteries
Paper & cardboard
Other garbage
The problem is that these containers are never consolidated together. For example, empty batteries deposits are found in the supermarket or shops, not near containers. Glass often has its own place away from the rest. And if this is not bad enough, the mix of any of the above-mentioned is out of whack.
In my personal case, the other garbage & PMD is barely 20 meters away. The paper & cardboard is well over 200 meters away and for the glass, I have to walk to another part of the neighborhood which is more than 400 meters away. For a young adult like me, not an issue but for elders, this is more of a hassle.
In addition, the spacing of these containers is also inefficient taking up a lot of (unnecessary) room. I think this can and should be done more efficiently.
I envision an overhaul of the system which resembles how trivial pursuit works. That little round thing with pies in them. This way you can have all types of garbage disposed of locally. Maybe making one type double size and others (less frequently used) half-sized. Obviously, all of them have sensors to detect when they are (almost) full so quick collection can be assured.
