It was the AFC Divisional Round playoffs. The Bills were down 27-24 to the Kansas City Chiefs. All I could think about was if the Bills would lose for the 3rd time in a row to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, or if Josh Allen would pull out a win and finally beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs. The winner would go to the AFC Championship in Baltimore to play the Ravens who beat the Houston Texans 34-10 the previous day. The Ravens were probably the best, if not 2nd best team in the NFL, with a stacked roster. If we won this game, I would still have hope that we would beat the Ravens next week.
One minute and forty-seven seconds left on the clock, the Bills were down 27-24 in the Divisional Round to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Bills have elected to put on Tyler Bass to attempt a 44-yard field goal on 4th & 9. Will he make it, and force a possible overtime, or will he miss and make the Bills lose to the Chiefs in the playoffs for 3 years in a row? My heart was beating fast, my legs were shaking. I was nervous. The ball was snapped, it was a good hold, and the laces pointed out the ball straight up. Bass took two steps forward to go for the kick. He smacked the ball with his foot and followed through. The kick went up, and… It’s wide right?
I put my head down in disbelief, knowing our season is over. I lost all hope. The pain continued to hit me, thinking about how much longer I would have to go through the pain of Buffalo losing in the playoffs every year, how long it would be until we won our first Super Bowl, how I would be dreading in pain of the reoccurring moment of a wide right field goal to end our season. Still in disbelief, I looked up at the tv to watch Isiah Pacheco run for a first down to end the game. I had so much hope, but Stefon Diggs and Tyler Bass had let all Buffalo Bills fans down. I stood up, not wanting to watch the celebration of Mahomes and Kelce waving goodbye. I walked out of the room and into my room. Laying on the bed, I couldn’t stop thinking about how we just lost after what was supposed to be “The Greatest Story Ever Told.” The Buffalo Bills started 6-6 with almost no hope of making the playoffs. Then, they won their next four games to go 10-6. If they won their next game, they would be the 2nd best team in their conference. We ended up winning and making the Pittsburgh Steelers come to our house and beat them. Now we were here. I kept reminding myself of how the Bills' old kicker Scott Norwood had missed a field goal wide right with 8 seconds left on the clock. If he made that field goal, the Bills would have won their first Super Bowl, but instead, the game ended with the Bills missing wide right.
