Our Community is a short, student-made story. The author of this is Sophia Hernandez, a Rising Scholars student.
In our community, there is a problem that has been left unresolved for over 200 years. That problem is inequality. There are many types of inequality such as gender and race. The inequality I would like to talk about is racial inequality. My reasoning for choosing inequality is that I am deeply inspired by Martin Luther King Jr and his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. That has become one of the greatest speeches in all American history. He fought for the rights of all Americans at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The reason why this is important is because it sometimes stops the will to act for good. This topic must be solved not just for the rights of the people of color, but to create a better society. We need a better society to show the children of this generation that we must respect each other. This is especially important if we want to see a future that we can be proud of and not divided By fixing this problem we will create a better world if left unfixed, the effect will lead to violence and resentment. If we truly want a world of respect, kindness, and love this is a step towards it. We have the power to do so, it lies in our hands. We need everyone to work together to work towards it. Inequality, for example, can lead to people losing their self-worth. There will be people saying “Well it doesn’t affect me “and to that, I say it may not affect you currently. But soon it will catch up to you in the future. Another thing to consider is what the person feels when shown no respect. Imagine being judged solely on your ancestry. Loss of self-respect leads to resentment and the disillusionment of a nation that can uphold its promises. We must remember that we are all humans, and our Declaration of Independence states "All men are created equal” Humans are capable of unique and amazing things but we must be given the same opportunities to thrive. We can't control what skin color we are born with, but we can choose to show respect for everyone and show equality. The United States was built with enlightenment ideals that all people deserve justice and the pursuit of happiness. Inequality is wrong and should be fixed immediately. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a giant step toward fighting inequality. Now we must educate a new generation to keep doing what is right and protect the rights of all people within our nation.
