PDCA is a four-step tool used for planning, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.
The PDCA cycle should be repeated again and again to continually improve Rio Salado's processes and practices to redefine the educational experience for our learners.

Plan - Do - Check - Act
Plan: Identify and analyze the problem
The "Plan" phase starts with identifying an opportunity for continuous improvement. It is important to establish goals and objectives that align with our Values and 3 Strategic Goals:
College Values
Innovation & Learning
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Integrity and Stewardship
Sustainable Practices
Collaboration & Service
College Strategic Goals
Increase student goal attainment 23% by 2023 with innovative & world class experiences
Offer 23 new microcredentials by 2023
Foster a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, & belonging
Study existing data to see if it is actionable or if more data needs to be collected. Once the data collected is actionable, determine the best type of intervention.
This closely aligns with the 4 Disciplines of Execution's Disciplines 1 & 2:
4DX: Discipline 1 - WHAT - Create WIG
4DX: Discipline 2 - HOW - Define Lead Measures
Do: Pilot the intervention
In phase two, the "Do" phase, it is time to implement and pilot the intervention.
Check: Study results & measure effectiveness
Measure the effects of the new process and compare the results against the expected results to ascertain any differences. Make a decision about the success of the improvement.
This closely aligns with the 4 Disciplines of Execution's Discipline 3:
4DX: Discipline 3 - SHOW - Track on Scoreboard
Act: Formalize / Standardize the process
Formalize and standardize the process or results and document the learning to close the loop.
While this loops is closed, the process improvement cycle is not. We now move to the next level in the spiral of the PDCA cycle.
This closely aligns with the 4 Disciplines of Execution's Discipline 4:
4DX: Discipline 4 - SHARE - Analyze and Evaluate
Library Example
Plan Example: Identify & Analyze the Problem
Increase awareness and use of the Library by conducting outreach to new RSC employees.
Collect data on number of new employees to establish baseline data.
Identify new employees in weekly Wave announcements.
Aligns with College value: Integrity and Stewardship.
Move to “DO”
Do Example: Pilot the Intervention
Send library welcome message to new employees two months after identification in the Wave. The welcome message invites new employees to activate their library accounts.
Move to “CHECK”
Check Example: Study results & measure effectiveness
Collect data again; determine if new employees activated library accounts after receiving welcome message.
If not, move back to the “Plan” phase. However, if the improvement meets the expectation, move forward to implement the intervention.
Move back to "PLAN" or forward to “ACT”
Act Example: Formalize/standardize
Standardize the process of sending Library welcome message to new employees.
Aligns with College value: Integrity and Stewardship by promoting use of library resources.
Move to "PLAN" to start a new cycle of improvement
