Roles and Responsibilities of the Key Organizational Representatives
Director of the Research Institute
- Ensures effective and efficient management of the research programs and administrative affairs of the research centers, which are specifically aligned with the university’s research priorities and agenda
- Maintains the confidence and cooperation of the research centers through ensuring the undertaking of high quality researches and dissemination of research outputs to the scientific community and other stakeholders
- Initiates and leads in the establishment of strong local, national and international networks with researchers and research institutes in the field of specialization as well as partnerships and/or collaborations with industries and commercial enterprises
- Participates as member of the University Research and Development Council (UREDCO) in the priority-setting, implementation and evaluation of the research and development program of the university and all other activities under this component of the institute
- Ensures the periodic publication of the PUP Journal of Science and Technology and all other activities in the publication and promotion component of the institute
Chief of the Research Center
- Strategically plan the research program of the center and ensure its successful implementation in meeting the research objectives and deliverables of every research project and activity
- Participates as a member of the University Research and Development Council (UREDCO) in the priority-setting, implementation and evaluation of the research and development program of the university
- Facilitates and ensures the continuous preparation of research proposals as well as the conduct of high quality research projects in the field of specialization in accordance with the research priorities of the institute and the university in general
- Continuously establishes and maintains linkages and collaborations with other researchers from academic and reputable research institutions in the field of specialization both locally and internationally
- Assists in the mentoring of faculty members and student researchers in the field with relevant activities of the center in promoting the research culture of the university
- Plans and promote possible collaborations with other research centers of the institute and other research components of the university
- Coordinates and cooperates with the office of the director in ensuring the effective implementation of the major functions of the institute.
Research Associate
- Continuously generate research proposals in the field of specialization of the center and submits them for discussion and approval of the chief of the research center
- Assists the chief of the center in the implementation of its research programs and activities
- Conducts and performs research activities in the completion of every research project of the center
- Coordinates and cooperates with the staff of the Office of the Director in the implementation of all activities of the institute
Administrative Staff
- Carry out all the tasks assigned by the director in the implementation of the daily activities of the institute
- Prepares inter-office communications that maybe assigned by the director
- Receives, files and records incoming communications
- Records and dispatch out-going communications and documents from the institute
- Ensures the over all order of the Office of Director of the institute
1. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
1.1 Introduction
The Research Institute for Science and Technology (RIST), formerly the Institute for Science and Technology Research (ISTR) centralizes the research activities of the university in the areas of science and technology. The RIST is focused in the conduct of researches in the field of engineering, chemistry, life science, physics, and mathematics, computer sciences, and information and communication technology.
Today, the RIST covers at least four (4) different centers namely Center for Life Science Research (CLSR), Center for Physical Science Research (CPSR), Center for Engineering and Technology Research (CETR), and Center for Mathematics, Computing and Information Science Research (CMCISR). Created in 2012, these centers are conducting researches in their respective line of expertise as well as establishing and maintaining linkages with other researchers and research institutes, both locally and internationally. It has also seen the completion and publication of several research outputs.
The vision of the institute is to achieve a prominent status and culture of efficiency and accuracy in the scientific community. These can be achieved by producing highly innovative research activities and outputs that are globally competitive.
1.2 Purpose
The RIST integrates holistic programs to implement various strategies in pursuing science and technology researches in the filed of life science, physical science, mathematics, engineering, computing and information science. It promotes scientific consciousness and produce relevant research and development expertise in the academe. Thus, developing indigenous, scientific and technological advancement in accordance with the university’s goal towards the advancement of social and capital innovation.
2. ORGANIZATION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
2.1 Organization and Key Personnel
The Institute for Science and Technology Research (ISTR) is directly reporting to the Office of Vice President for Research, Extension, Planning and Development (OVPREPD) with the following organization and functions.
2.2 Functional Statements of the Organizational Entities
The general function of the institute is to formulate and implement plans, programs and strategies for science and technology through research and development. Specifically, its four specific functions are (1) conduct of research, (2) establishing linkages and collaborations, (3) publication and promotion, and (4) training and extension.
A. Conduct of Research
- prepares research proposals and submits them for funding to local and international funding institutions
- conducts actual science and technology researches
- accomplishes and submits reports of research outputs to sponsor institutions
- regular attendance to trainings and manpower development in the fields of science and technology research
- monitors and assesses the progress of the on-going and completed science and technology researches conducted by the institute
B. Establishing Linkages and Collaborations
- establishes networks and research linkages with local, national and international researchers and research institutions
- maintains collaborations and linkages through the conduct of interdisciplinary researches
- invites and maintain partnerships with commercial and industrial businesses involved in science and technology products and research both locally and internationally
C. Evaluation, Publication and Promotion
- disseminates research results to local, national and/or international conferences, symposia and fora
- publishes research outputs to reputable local, national and/or international scientific journals
- carry out the regular publication of the PUP Journal of Science and Technology
- promotes the science and technology research agenda of the university through the conduct of lectures, seminars, colloquia, workshops and symposia as well as in the form of print and broadcast media
- participates in the evaluation of science and technology research proposals submitted for institutional funding in the university
- mentors and assists science and technology researchers (from inside and outside the university) through consultancies and sharing of the use of research laboratories
3. OPERATIONAL CONTROL AND SUPERVISION

- promotes the science and technology research agenda of the university through the conduct of lectures, seminars, colloquia, workshops and symposia
- undertakes and/or supervises science and technology researches funded internally or by nationally and/or international funding institutions
- establishes and maintains research linkages with the local, national and international research institutions
- disseminates research results to local, national and/or international conferences or fora
- publishes research outputs to scientific local, national and/or international journals
- encourages and motivates faculty and students to carry out science and technology researches
- evaluates research proposals submitted for institutional funding of the university
- monitors and assesses the progress of the on-going and completed researches conducted by faculty and students
- mentors and assists science and technology researches (from inside and outside the university) through consultancies and sharing the use of the research laboratory
- attends trainings and manpower development in the science and technology areas of research
- publishes the PUP Journal of Science and Technology
- monitors and ensures the implementation of biosafety practices in research conducted in the university
