ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
The Research Institute for Culture and Language fosters research-based and workshop-led outputs and activities across divisional and disciplinary boundaries. The Institute promotes and engages with interpretative (or hermeneutic), historical, social, philosophical and political researches as well as theoretical works in the Arts and allied disciplines.
The Institute is managed and supervised by a Director. It houses the following Research Centers: Center for Creative Writing, Center for Language and Literary Studies, Center for Philosophy and Humanities, and the Center for Philippine Studies. Just last year (2020), the Board of Regents approved the Institute’s proposal to add another Center which is the Center for Translation Studies.
Director
The Research Institute for Culture and Language has the following duties and responsibilities: 1) to establish an archive of published and unpublished researches, works, and personal papers associated with the formation of the Institute and its associated centers; 2) to construct and house a special library of cultural studies publication; 3) to foster linkages with universities here and abroad, art groups and/or organizations and creative industries; 4) to organize regular symposia and conferences (national and international) and annual lecture series; 5) to establish professorial chairs, fellowship grants, and scholarship and faculty and student exchange program in cultural studies and associated disciplines; 6) to augment disciplinary expertise for curricular development in order to deliver informed course teaching in undergraduate and graduate programs of the University; and, 7) to provide assistance to undergraduate and graduate students and faculty working on cultural studies and associated disciplines.
CENTER FOR PHILIPPINE STUDIES
Chief
The Center fosters researches and activities in social history, which deal with empirical and theoretical studies focusing on everyday or ordinary life rarely broached upon in historical, political, and economic studies.
Specifically, the center has the following duties and responsibilities: a) to forge partnerships for research collaborations and other related engagements with reputable institutions in the world that also foster Philippine Studies; b) to intensify production, presentation, and publication of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research on Philippine identities and applied research that focuses on Philippine realities; c) to become a National Center for Philippine Studies, which will bring together researchers and scholars interested in the study of Philippine social and cultural history and traditions in order to promote mutual awareness among the peoples of the world through the center’s activities such as research conferences, lectures, workshops, seminars and trainings; d) to make the Center’s resources available to any Philippine government agencies that may have the need for them as reference for policy making and laws for Filipino people; and, e) to establish research prize and researcher exchange programs in Philippine studies and associated disciplines.
CENTER FOR LITERARY AND LANGUAGE STUDIES
Chief
This Center fosters researches in the following areas: linguistics, literary theories, language studies, Literary Criticism, and other emerging topics and issues concerning multilingualism, ethnolinguistics, bilingualism, and education, among others.
The center's duties and responsibilities include the following: a) undertake comprehensive training and workshop in the areas of translation and language studies; b) publish literary works written in various regional dialects and other interesting and insightful outputs; c) vitalize studies and researches on literature from the regional, national to international levels; d) conduct forum, conferences, and trainings related to theory and philosophy of literature and literary criticism; and, e) provide translation services
CENTER FOR CREATIVE WRITING
Chief
This Center fosters researches and workshop-led activities in creative works, such as writing, literary criticism, visual and performing arts, film and film criticism; also critical thinking, and theoretical seminars in upgrading conceptual tools for enhancing creative and research craft.
It shall: a) foster researches and workshop-led activities in creative writing; b) conduct seminars and trainings to hone creative writing skills of budding student and faculty writers; c) cultivate creative writing not only as an art but also as a research craft; d) serve as a conduit of the University with institutions and organizations (e.g National Commission for Culture and the Arts, National Book Development Book, etc.) concerning programs and projects that are centered on creative writing; e) publish creative outputs of PUP- bred writers and other significant and nationally/internationally renowned writers and scholars; and, f) periodically publish the Entrada Journal.
CENTER FOR PHILOSOPHY AND HUMANITIES
Chief
This Center fosters researches in philosophical aesthetic and/or theoretical and methodological experimentations on various approaches on themes, issues and topics across the disciplines of philosophy and humanities.
It shall: a) foster researches in philosophy, aesthetics, sociology, and other theoretical and methodological experimentations on various approaches, issues, and topics across the disciplines of Philosophy and Humanities; b) conduct research capability seminars and trainings that are meant to cultivate research interest on Philosophy and Humanities and other related fields; c) publish journals (e.g Mabini Review) and other academic publication (e.g books, etc.) that promote among scholars and thinkers in the university the importance of the philosophy and humanities; d) facilitate workshops that are calculated to produce qualitative researches that would contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the speculative disciplines of philosophy and humanities; e) forge links and networks with national and international academic institutions and professional organizations in philosophy and humanities; and, f) provide expert and academic opinions on issues and concerns that are expected to contribute to national and international policy development.
CENTER FOR TRANSLATION STUDIES
Chief
This Center promotes an exhaustive study of translation approaches, theories, and strategies. Other than a venue where research and research capability-building activities are conducted, the Center also provides translation services to local clients and clients from partner agencies.
Specifically, the center has the following duties and responsibilities: a) to conduct conferences, seminars, and lectures on translation and translation studies; b) to strengthen the relationship between departments and colleges by translating important documents required by their field to the coordination or bringing of knowledge to the community in the form of extensions; and, c) to deliver service within and outside the university by translating or evaluating translations of documents from private and international industries or agencies that will serve as resource.
