第506重戦車大隊の大隊長であったGerhard Willing少佐は、1943年9月に大隊の45両のTiger Iを率いてドニエプル川の戦いにおけるザポリージャ橋頭堡の防衛戦任務に就いた。ドイツのSennelagerでTiger Iを受領し、9月9日から9月12日で11便の貨車に分割して積載。5日間をかけて終着駅のUkraineのザポリージャ へ移動、9月17日から9月20日でTiger I は貨車から荷おろしされた。第9装甲師団指揮下となった大隊はザポリージャとドニエプルダム周辺の防衛戦に配備、第335歩兵師団などの支援も行った。
少佐の報告書には、Tiger Iの鉄道輸送の記録、9月20日から9月26日のザポリージャ防衛戦でのTiger Iの激しい消耗度、士気が低い歩兵部隊への厳しい指摘が書かれている。
Major Gerhard Willing, battalion commander of the 506th Panzer battalion [s.Pz.Abt.506], led the battalion's 45 Tiger I tanks on a mission to defend the Zaporizhzhia bridgehead in the Battle of the Dnieper River in September 1943. The Tigers received at Sennelager loaded in eleven separate railroad flatcars from 9 to 12 September, they moved to the terminal station at Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine over a five-days and unloaded from the wagons from 17 to 20 September. The battalion, now under the command of the 9th Armored Division, deployed to defensive positions around sections at Zaporizhzhia and the Dnieper Dam and supported the 335th Infantry Division, etc.
The major's report tells the records of Tiger I railroad transports, the intense attrition of Tiger I during the Zaporizhzhia defensive battles from 20 to 26 September, and scathing remarks about the infantry units with low morale.

Vorläufiger Erfahrungsbericht der Tiger-Abteilung 506
I.) Antransport mit der Bahn.
Die Abteilung wurde vom 9.9.43, 17.00 Uhr, bis 12.9.43, 18.00 Uhr, auf einer Kopframpe und einer Sonderverladekopframpe für Tiger, sowie an einer Seitenrampe für Radfahrzeuge auf 11 Transporte verladen (Dauer 3 Tage).
Jn Snamenka, 25 km nordostwärts Kirowo, sollte der Wechsel von Verladekette auf Marschkette erfolgen, damit die Entladung der Tiger am Endbahnhof schneller geht und pro Transport über eine Kopframpe etwa 1/2 Std. dauert. Die Züge wurden über Dnjepropetrowsk - Sinelnikowo nach Saporoshje, jedoch ohne Kettenwechsel weitergeleitet. Auf der schlechten und stark beschädigten Kopframpe dauerte das Entladen sehr lange, sodaß die rasch aufeinander eintreffenden Transportzüge 1 bis 1 1/2 Tag warten mussten, was nicht geschehen brauchte, wenn unterwegs der Kettenwechsel durchgeführt worden wäre.

Erst am 20.9., 9.00, war der 9.Transport ausgeladen.
Am 20.9.43 gegen 3.00 Uhr kam der zusammengelegte 10.u.11. Transport in Dnjeprostroj an.
Die Verladeketten mussten auf dem Bahnhof liegenbleiben, um das Entladen der zum Einsatz dringend benötigten Tiger zu beschleunigen. Später wurden die Verladeketten durch ein Arbeitskommando auf die Ssymswagen verladen. Dies führte zu Reibungen mit der Bahnhofskommandantur wurde aber vom XVII.A.K. als notwendig entschieden. Durch die lange Entladung wurde der durch die Rückwärtsbewegungen erhöhte Bahnbetrieb sehr erschwert.
Alle Züge kamen von Partisanen unbehelligt an. Das Ausgeben der warmen Zusatzverpflegung unterwegs klappte gut.
II.) Taktischer Einsatz im Brückenkopf Saporoshje als bewegliche Reserve:
Die Tiger-Abteilung 506 wurde am 18.9. dem XVII.A.K. und am 20.9., 12.00 Uhr, der 9.Panzer-Division unterstellt, welche selbst nur noch 3-8 Panzer einsatzbereit hatte. Diese untersteht dem XXXX.Pz.A.K. zum Bereinigen von feindlichen Einbrüchen.
Durch die Bildung des Brückenkopfes Saporoshje bedingt, wurden die Kompanien einzeln am 20., 21., 22. u. 23.9. dort eingesetzt, wo der Russe versuchte, die schwachen Stellungen zu durchbrechen. Die Panzerstärken betrugen pro Kompanie 10, 11 u. 13. Panzer. Jedesmal gelang es durch den Einsatz der Tiger, die Russen zurückzuschlagen. Dauereinsatz und die vielen Verschiebungen ließen wenig Zeit zur technischen Wartung der Panzer. Es war kaum Zeit vorhanden, Betriebsstoff u. Munition aufzufüllen. Am 24.9. wurde die Abteilung mit allen einsatzbereiten Panzern in Stärke von 13 Tigern, am 25.9. mit 11 und am 26.9. mit 9 Tigern geschlossen eingesetzt. Nach dem Angriff am 26.9., der ein Ausfall aus dem Brückenkopf in die feindlichen Artl.-Stellungen war, stand kein Tiger mehr einsatzbereit zur Verfügung.
Die vorgesetzte Dienststelle wurde von mir darauf aufmerksam gemacht, daß bei Angriffen aus dem Brückenkopf heraus ausfallende Tiger, die nicht mehr abgeschleppt werden können, gesprengt werden müssen und in Feindeshand fallen.
Die 9. Panzer-Division hat die Tiger richtig eingesetzt, leider konnte sie, wie auch ich nicht immer verhindern, daß dem Tiger zu viel zugemutet wurde und den Kompanieführern Befehle gegeben wurden, die zum Verlust oder Ausfall von Panzern führten, welche nicht notwendig waren. Durch die Propaganda in unserer Presse ist der Tiger als ein unverwundbarer Rammbock hingestellt worden. Er kann aber vom T 34 oder der 7,62 Pak frontal auf 500 m, von der Seite und Hinten auf 1500 m abgeschossen werden.
Beim Bereinigen von Einbrüchen ging die durch den Rückzug nicht gerade moralisch gestärkte Infanterie nur noch vor, wenn sie ein Tiger bis in die alte Stellun begleitete.
Daß ein Scheunentor auf dem Gefechtsfelde alles Feuer auf sich zieht und daß dieses die Infanterie vom Tiger trennt, ist eine alte Erfahrung, die aber nicht geglaubt wird.
Die niedrigen Sturmgeschütze eignen sich für diese Aufgabe, aber nicht der große und 2,88 m hohe Tiger! Die Stärke des Tigers ist seine weittragende 8,8 cm Kanone und nicht die Panzerung. Er darf nicht als fahrender Wall benutzt werden. Blieben beim Vorwärtsbringen der Infanterie die Tiger in einer Deckung gegen Sicht stehen, woraus sie ebenso gut Feuerschutz geben konnten, wie 300 m davor, so blieb die Infantsliegen und war nicht mehr vorwärts zu bewegen.
Dann kamen Befehle wie: Tigerangriff zu lahm, weiter vorgehen!
Machten die Panzer einen Sprung von 1 km, um nicht mitten auf einer Anhöhe zu stehen, so blieb die Infanterie wieder liegen, die Tiger seien ihnen davongefahren.
Die dichte Traubenbildung von Schützen hinter jedem Panzer war nicht durch Befehl und Belehrung zu verhindern, sondern nur durch feindliches Granatwerferfeuer. Oft standen die Tiger stundenlang weit vor der Infanterie im feindlichen Artl.- und Granatwerferfeuer, ohne daß die Infanterie heran kam. Durch das lange Stehen im Feuer wird das Laufwerk zerschossen, Panzerbüchsen schießen meist auf die Kanone und die Sehschlitze, ebenso verursachen die Paktreffer aus weiter Entfernung Schäden am Panzer, auch wenn sie nicht hindurchgehen. Setzt sich mal ein Tiger etwas ab und sucht eine günstigere Stellung aus, so geht die Infanterie sofort zurück. Sie glaubt, wenn dieser starke Panzer das Feuer nicht aushält, dann kann sie es erst recht nicht.
Lehre:
Der Tiger unterstützt das Vorgehen der Infanterie durch Feuer im direkten Beschuß und muß dabei seine Bewegungsfreiheit haben. Die Infanterie darf nicht hinter dem Tiger als Traube kleben, denn sonst bekommt sie das dem Panzer geltende Feuer. Sie muß so geöffnet vorgehen, als wenn keine Tiger dabei wären!

Preliminary field report of 506th Tiger Battalion
I.) The railroad transport.
The battalion loaded on 11 transports from 17.00, 9.Sep, 1943 to 18:00,12 Sep, 1943 with an end loading ramp, a special loading ramp for Tigers, and a side loading ramp for wheeled vehicles (duration 3 days).
At Snamenka [Znamianka], 25 km northeast of Kirovo [Kropyvnytskyi], the change from transport track to terrain track was to be made so that unloading of the Tigers at the terminal station would be faster and take about 1/2 hr per transport with an end loading ramp. The trains were transported via Dnipro - Synelnykove to Zaporizhzhia, but without changing of track. On the poor and badly damaged end loading ramp [at Saporoshje], unloading took a very long time, so that the transport trains arriving quickly one after the other had to wait 1 to 1 and 1/2 days, which would not have had to happen if the track change had been carried out en route.

Only on 09:00, 20 Sep, the 9th transport was unloaded.
About 03:00, the assembled 10th and 11th transport arrived in Dnjeprostroj.
The transport tracks had to remain at the station to speed up the unloading of the Tigers, which were urgently needed for deployment. Later, the transport tracks were loaded onto the Ssyms wagons by an Arbeitskommando. This caused friction with the station command but was decided by the XVII.Army Corps to be necessary.
The long unloading time made the rail operations, which was increased by the retrograde movement, very difficult.
All trains arrived unmolested by partisans.
The distribution of the warm additional foods on the way worked out well.
II.) Tactical employment at the Saporoshje [Zaporizhzhia] bridgehead as a mobile reserve:
The 506th Tiger Battalion was placed under the command of the XVII.Army Corps on 18 Sep, and on 12:00, 20 Sep under the 9th Panzer Division, which itself had only 3-8 tanks ready for action. This [division] was subordinated to the XXXX.Panzer Corps for repelling enemy break throughs.
Due to the formation of the bridgehead Saporoshje, the companies were deployed individually on 20, 21, 22 and 23 Sep, where the Russians tried to break through the weak positions. The tank strength was 10, 11 and 13 tanks per company. Each time, the use of the Tigers succeeded in beating back the Russians. Continuous deployment and the many shifts left little time for technical maintenance of the tanks. There was hardly time to supply fuel and ammunition. On 24 Sep, the battalion deployed with all tanks ready for action in the strength of 13 Tigers, on 25 Sep with 11 and on 26 Sep with 9 Tigers closed. After the attack on 26 Sep, which was a sortie from the bridgehead into the enemy artillery positions, no Tiger was available ready for action.
The superior office was made aware by me that in attacks from the bridgehead, failing Tigers that could no longer be towed would have to be blown up and fall into enemy hands.
The 9th Panzer Division used the Tigers correctly, but unfortunately, they expected too much for the Tiger and as I did they did not always prevent company commanders from giving orders that led to the loss or breakdown of tanks that were not needed.
Propaganda in our press has portrayed the Tiger as an invulnerable battering ram. However, it can be shot down by the T-34 or the 7.62cm Pak head-on at 500 meters, from the side and rear at 1,500 meters. When repelling against the enemy's break through, the infantry, not having high morale by the retreat, only advanced if a Tiger accompanied them to the initial position. That a big target [tank] draws all the fire upon itself on the battlefield and that this separates the infantry from the Tiger is old experience, but not believed. The low assault guns are suitable for this task, but not the large and 2.88 m high Tiger! The Tiger's strength is its long-range 8.8 cm gun, not its armor. It must not be used as a moving rampart. If the infantry were advancing and the Tigers were standing there in cover against sight, from which they could provide fire protection and defend 300 meters in front of them, the infantry remained lying, and could no longer be moved forward.
Then we received the following orders: “Tiger attack is too slow, continue to advance!”
If the tanks advanced in the lead for 1 km away to avoid standing in the middle of a hill, but the infantry was still there and lying down again, then the Tigers had driven away from them. The dense crowding of riflemen behind each tank could not be prevented by orders and instruction, but only by enemy mortar fire. Often the Tigers stood for hours far ahead of the infantry in enemy artillery and mortar fire without the infantry approaching. Standing in the fire for a long time the running gear was shot in pieces, and the gun and the sight slits were mostly shot by tank guns, likewise, the anti-tank gun hits from a long distance caused damage to the tank even if they did not penetrate it. If a Tiger moves back a bit and seeks out a more advantageous position, the infantry will immediately retreat. They believe that if this strong tank can't withstand the fire, then infantry even weaker can't.
Instruction:
The Tiger supports the infantry's advance firing in direct shooting and must ensure freedom of movement itself. The infantry may not stick behind the Tiger as a grape, because otherwise they suffer damage from the fire to the tank. They [the infantly] must advance so spreaded, as if no Tigers were there!

I.) 鉄道輸送
大隊は、自 1943年9月9日17時、至 9月12日18時の11便分の貨車輸送に、線端積卸台 1台、Tiger専用線端積卸台 1台と装輪車両用の側端積卸台 1台を用いて積載した(3日間)。
Kirovo [Kropyvnytskyi] の北東25kmの Snamenka [Znamianka] において輸送用履帯から野外用履帯に付け替えたのは、終着駅でのTigersの卸下をより速く、線端積卸台で1貨物あたり約1/2時間にする為である。
列車は Dnjepropetrowsk [Dnipro] - Sinelnikowo [Synelnykove] 経由で Saporoshje [Zaporizhzhia] に輸送されたが、履帯交換は行われなかった。
[Saporoshjeの] 線端積卸台は脆弱で酷く損傷しており、卸下に非常に時間が取られ、次々と到着する輸送列車を1日から1日半待たせることになった。もし途中で履帯交換をしていれば、このようなことは起きなかっただろう。

9月20日0900まで第9便は卸下されなかった。
1943年9月20日0300頃に、第10便と第11便がまとめて Dnjeprostrojに到着。
緊急で配備が必要であるTigerの卸下を速めるため、輸送用履帯は駅に残置せざるを得なかった。その後、労働班が輸送用履帯をSsyms長物車[貨車]に積載した。これは駅司令部との摩擦を引き起こしたが、第17軍団は必要な措置であったと判断した。
長時間の卸下の影響で、後退によって増加していた鉄道の運行は非常に困難なものとなった。
すべての列車はパルチザンに妨害されることなく到着した。途中の暖かい追加の食料の配給はうまくいった。
II.) 機動予備隊としてのSaporoshje [Zaporizhzhia]橋頭堡での戦術運用：
第506 Tiger大隊は9月18日に第17軍団の指揮下に入り、9月20日 12:00に第9装甲師団の指揮下に入ったが、この師団自体には運用可能な戦車が3-8台しかなかった。師団は敵の突破を撃退するため第40装甲軍団の指揮下に入った。
Saporoshje 橋頭堡陣地のため、中隊は9月20、21、22、23日に、ロシア軍が弱い陣地を突破しようとする場所において個別に配備された。我が中隊あたりの戦車数は10、11、13両であった。Tigerを都度投入することで、ロシア軍の撃退に成功した。継続的な作戦配備と多くの移動により、戦車の技術的な整備の時間の時間はほとんどなかった。燃料と弾薬を補給する時間もほとんどなかった。9月24日に、大隊は運用可能な全戦車13台のTigerを投入、9月25日には11台、9月26日には9台のTigersで出撃した。
9月26日に敵砲兵陣地へ橋頭堡から出撃して攻撃した後、運用可能なTigerは1台も残っていなかった。
橋頭堡からの攻撃において牽引不可で故障したTigersは爆破を避けられず、敵の手に渡ることを、小官は司令部へ危惧を申し入れた。
第9戦車師団はTigersを正しく使用したが、残念ながらTigerに過度の期待を寄せ、中隊長に必要のない戦車の損失や故障につながる命令を与えることを、私のように常に防ぐことはできなかった。我が国の報道の宣伝では、Tigerは無敵の破城槌として描かれている。しかし、T-34や7.62cm対戦車砲で正面から500m、側面や後方から1,500mで撃破できる。敵の突破を撃退する際、退却で士気の上がらない歩兵は、Tigerが旧陣地まで伴わないと前進しなかった。戦場で大きな標的 [戦車] にすべての射撃を引き付けることになり、歩兵とTigerが引き離される経験はあるが信じられるものではない。低い突撃砲はこの任務に適しているが、大型で高さ2.88mのTigerは適さない！Tigerの強みは長射程の8.8cm砲であって、装甲ではない。動く城壁として使用してはならない。歩兵が前進中に、Tigerが視界を遮る位置にいて前方300mまで防御射撃できる場合、歩兵は地面に伏せたままになり、もはや前進することができない。
そして[我らは]次の命令を受けることになった:「Tigerは攻撃が遅いから前進を続けろ！」
戦車が丘の真ん中で暴露しないように1km先頭へ前進しても、歩兵が動かず伏せたままだと、Tigersが彼らを取り残したことになる。各戦車の後ろに兵士が密集することは、命令や指示では防げず、敵の迫撃砲射撃によってのみ防げた。歩兵が接近しないまま、Tigerが敵の大砲や迫撃砲の砲撃の中で、歩兵のはるか前方で何時間も待つことがよくあった。長時間砲火にさらされると、走行装置は粉微塵に撃たれ、砲や覘視孔は戦車砲でかなり撃たれ、同様に遠距離からの対戦車砲の命中弾は貫通しなくても戦車にダメージを与えた。Tigerが少しでも後退し、より有利な位置を探すと、歩兵は即座に退却する。この頑丈な戦車が砲火を受けられないのなら、なおさら弱い歩兵は受けられないと考えるからである。
教訓：
Tigerは、直接射撃により歩兵の前進を支援し、自らも移動の自由を確保せねばならない。歩兵はブドウのようにTigerの後ろにくっついてはいけない、そうしないと戦車への砲撃で損害を被るからだ。彼ら[歩兵]は、あたかもTigersがそこにいないかの様に、展開して進まなければならない！
1. Study of the report
SennelagerもしくはPaderbornにおいて、第506戦車大隊は1943年8月末に受領した45両のTiger Iを、9月9日から9月12日にかけて11便分の長物車に分けて積載したのではないかと想定している。
Wolfgang Schneider 『重戦車大隊記録集1』 には「英軍が捕らえたドイツ軍捕虜の証言の中に、ドイツ国鉄は1列車に搭載するティーガーを4両までに制限していたというものがある。この証言が正しいとすると、11列車に4両となり大体数が合う」と記載されている。
ここで、Gerhard Willing少佐の報告書と1940年代の地図をもとに、鉄道輸送のルートを考察した。
仮にドイツの Seenelagerから Ukraineの Zaporizhzhiaへ鉄道輸送したとすると、約5日間でおよそ2,300kmの移動距離の行程となる。
積載を行った列車はUkraineの Snamenka [Znamianka] で停止、輸送用履帯から野外用履帯に取り付け直したTiger Iを再び長物車に積載し、列車は Dnjepropetrowsk [Dnipro] へ向けて東進。Dnjepropetrowsk [Dnipro] 北のドニエプル川にかかる鉄道橋を渡り Sinelnikowo [Synelnykove] へ向けて東進した後、Saporoshje [Zaporizhzhia] へ向けて南進したのではないか。また全11便のうち第10便と第11便はドニエプル川の西のDnjeprostroj駅で卸下したのではないか、と想定している。
Snamenka [Znaminka] で野外用履帯に取り付け直すことの時間的メリットは、まだ理解できていない。少佐の報告書では1貨車あたりの卸下を30分間にするためであった。一方で、別のドイツ軍報告書ではTiger 3台につき履帯交換には5-10時間程度かかることが判っている。もし積載、卸下、履帯交換、他の各工程のおよその所要時間が明確になれば、Gerhard Willing少佐が判断した理由を理解できるのではないかと思われる。
2. Dnipro Dam explotion
以下は Dnjeprostroj ドニエプルダムについてインターネット情報を整理したものである。
上記の地名にもある Dnjeprostrojの単語は、一般的にはZaporizhzhia 西のドニエプル川に建設された ドニエプルダム として知られている。ダムは1932年に発電を開始、1941年にドイツ軍侵攻に対しソ連軍がダムを爆破、1942年にドイツが修復、1943年10月14-15日にドイツ軍が撤退時に爆破。1943年12月30日にソ連軍によって開放された。

Waters Sent Rolling Over Russian Countryside to Block Crimean Drive.

The waters of the great Dnieper Dam- the largest in Europe- were sent rolling over the Russian countryside once more by German troops, the Berlin radio reported today in acknowledging their flight from Zaporozhe, their long-held southern key base and guardian fortress of the Crimea.
News that the $110,000,000 Dneprostroy had been blown up by the enemy indicated that they had succeeded in repairing it after the Russians destroyed its usefulness themselves, when falling back from the Dnieper in 1941 in what was called the greatest piece of self-sabotage of all time.
The gigantic dam is situated at the lower end of the Dnieper rapids, a few miles north of Zaporozhe, and was considered one of the outstanding industrial achievements of the Soviet regime. Its waters generated power for the whole industrial area of the Ukraine and it has been said that "whoever controls the dam controls the whole south- western Russian industry."
By blowing up the great dam, five miles northwest of Zaporozhe, the Germans evidently hoped to stall the Russian advance westward and to prevent the entrapment of garrisons in the Crimea, believed to number more than 100,000 troops.
There was no confirmation of the dam's destruction from Moscow and it was not known whether the Russians would be able to transport their armies across the newly- flooded terrain to close the Crimean escape corridors.

$110,000,000のDneprostroy [ドニエプル ダム] が敵 [ドイツ軍]に爆破されたというニュースは、ロシア軍が1941年にドニエプル川から撤退する際に史上最大の自爆行為と呼ばれるその有用性を自ら破壊した後、彼ら [ドイツ] がその修復に成功したことを意味している。
この巨大なダムは、ドニエプル川の急流の下流、Zaporozheの北方数マイルに位置し、ソ連政権の優れた産業成果の1つとされていた。その水はウクライナの全工業地帯に電力を供給し、「ダムを制する者はロシア南西部の全産業を制する」と言われた。
Zaporozheの北西5マイルにあるこの大きなダムを爆破することで、ドイツ軍は明らかにロシアの西方への進撃を遅らせ、10万人以上いると思われる[ドイツ軍の]クリミア守備隊の封じ込めを防ごうとした。
