Toolbar Icons

Toolbar icons allow the user to take an action relevant to a whole screen.

Click the Save icon in the toolbar when you are done editing.

NOTE: Always click the Save icon to save your changes, if this icon is present in the toolbar.

At times, the saving function is conveyed by a button named Save.

Click the Cancel icon to ignore the changes that you have made since the last Save and return to the previous menu.

Click the Done icon to revert to the previous screen.


Click the Back icon to revert to the previous screen.

NOTE: Before leaving the current screen, you may want to save your changes by clicking the Save icon or the Save button, if provided. Failure to do so results in losing all the changes since the last save. Unless you changed your mind, or you noticed a problem, save your changes before leaving the page.

Click the Save and Done icon to save your changes and revert to the previous screen.

Click the Printer icon to print the displayed document (e.g. a form or a report).

Click the Spell Checker icon to check the spelling of a note, comment, etc.

Click the Clear icon to erase the entered text.

Click the Comment Library icon to open the comment library.

Click the Help icon to view on-line guidelines and documentation.

In-Line Icons

Editing an entity can be performed by clicking the Edit icon beside the entity's name.

WARNING: It may be the case the Edit icon, when clicked, is replaced by a Save Icon. This is usually the case when an input box is provided to edit a name. Be sure, in this case, to click the Save icon when the name editing is completed. Do not mistake this icon for the similar, but larger icon in the toolbar. Clicking the Save Icon does not eliminate the need to click the Save icon in the toolbar or the Save button in order to save your changes.

At times you are only allowed to view am entity, this is shown by the View icon.

Deleting an entity can be performed by clicking the Delete Icon beside the entity's name.

It is quite common that a user is not allowed to delete certain entities. This is shown by the grayed-out (i.e. disabled) Delete Icon.

Click the Quick Help Icon to view information about the entity in question.

Click the Spell Checker icon beside a text input box to spell check the text entered in the box.

Click the Clear Icon beside a text input box to erase the text entered in the box.

Click the Comment Icon beside a text input box to paste a library comment into the box.

To use the Comment Icon, open first the Comment Library in the toolbar and select the desired comment.

To indicate the creation of new entities, the Create Icon is often used.

Click the Calendar / Clock Icon to set the day and time e.g. of the start or end of a reporting period.

A calendar pops up:

Adjust if necessary the month using the two drop-down to select a different month.

Adjust if necessary the the year using the text input box.

Alternately, the month and year may be changed by clicking on several icons.


  • Click on << to start the report from the same month of the previous year.
  • Click on < to start the report from the previous month.
  • Click on Today to start the report today.
  • Click on > to start the report from the next month.
  • Click on >> to start the report from the same month of the next year.


Click on a day inside the month calendar to select it.

Some applications may possible a hierarchy of entities similar to that of folders and files on your computer.

Click the Expand Icon to expand the entity and view individual components or members.

NOTE: At times, the Expand Icon is used to display a field, such as a text input box, which is otherwise hidden.

When you click the Expand Icon, it is replaced by the Collapse Icon and the a list of components

becomes visible under the entity and indented to the right.

The process of expansion may be possible on the component entities as well. You will know that this is so by the presence of the Expand icons.

By clicking the Collapse Icon, the list is hidden and the icon is replaced by the Expand Icon.

NOTE: It is not necessary to know the application in question in order to follow this example.

In the next figures, Expand icons are clicked repeatedly. First, eTeacher is expanded:

Then, Report is expanded:

Finally, Legacy Ontario Report Card is expanded:

Navigation Icons

You may be able to navigate to each of the items in a sequence starting from any of the sequence's items. To this purpose, the following icons are sometimes provided:

  • First Item
  • Previous Item
  • Next Item
  • Last Item
